I have two part symbology in a field maps app that I created in 2022.
The user would go into field maps and click the plus button to add and would pick the symbol and it would populate the status and category field for them.
The symbols looked like this:
Recently this broke and now they just click a generic point icon and click the drop down menu for status and drop down menu for category.
Is it possible to get the symbology back? I don't know what broke it or how to fix it.
I am working in map viewer classic, and in field maps.
Solved! Go to Solution.
Don't believe you can symbolize off of 2 text fields in AGOL. It will read your symbolize but won't let you customize and work on it that way.
Adding on to this, you can use an Arcade expression to smash several fields into one, I've found this just as easy to create and maintain as standard 2 or 3-field symbology.
I would recommend recreating the map in the new map viewer and then open it with field maps. I have had issues with symbology no being compatible with map viewer classic.
1. About your symbology, if it was originally created in desktop or arcgis pro. Once you shared it online/portal, I think it should have created a service definition. You can export the service definition and you should be able to find the original copy of your project and you can pull the symbology from there or bring in your current data and overwrite the layer.
2. You can make a "Style" and share it to your Online/Portal and symbolize your existing data.
3. If you cannot preserve your symbols, you can remake them using Google Docs Drawing feature and export files as PNG once you are finished. Pull them into ArcGIS Pro preferably, make a style and share them out so you can symbolize in online/portal.
If I open the project that I created in map viewer classic, in the new map viewer it displays the symbology correctly. But if I click on the symbology tool it shows the symbology being based on the "Type" field only.
But it is based on the type and the Status fields.
Here are some screenshots to show that:
I tried saving the map in Map Viewer, but field maps still only shows the plain point symbology.
Next I tried opening this one layer in the new map viewer and recreating the symbology there, but it wouldn't let me do two part symbology with my text fields.
It only allowed me to use one text field and one date field.
Here are screenshots of that:
I choose "type" for the first part of the symbology:
It only allows me to use one of these date fields for my second part of the symbology, not my text field.

@DavidSolari Thank you!!! Yes that works.
I will include my screenshots in case it helps anyone else.
In the new map viewer, under symbology, click to add expression:
This is my expression:
Example of my symbology, I have to adjust the symbols in map viewer to what I want to see in field maps.
This will get the symbology to do two part symbology in map viewer. But it still didn't update my symbology in field maps to be two part symbology so I had to update the field maps template.
In field maps designer on the template tab it looked like this, which is why when I go to add a new point in the app it only shows this plain symbol.
I clicked this copy button in the screenshot above and added a copy for each two part symbology I wanted to be available in field maps, and updated the fields that I wanted to be selected then the symbology updated to two part symbology in field maps.
What is interesting is I did this in a new map viewer as a test using only 1 layer, and I opened the field map for this test and added the following two part symbology and after I clicked save it also changed my working field map to have the same two part symbology, but it used the symbology that was setup in the map viewer for my working map.
Here is a screenshot showing that the symbology updated to my working field app:
@Laura What a bummer! It worked using map viewer classic for 3 years. I will add a comment to the link you sent me, thank you for sharing this with me.
Everyday I feel like I am losing more functionality in my tools that I used to have, and I think my tools are broken, but in reality ESRI's newer tools do not support what they used to. So I just spend all of this time hating my job, not knowing why things are worse then they were before.
Then my coworkers ask me if I am okay because I look sad and stressed and I just tell them I am fine. But I am not fine. Things just keep getting worse, and I don't see a light at the end of this "map viewer" and "experience builder" tunnel of gloom I am in this year.
