Background

In an Enterprise deployment of the utility network that uses a services-based architecture, the available capabilities are dependent on the versions of  ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise , and the utility network. The utility network version value indicates the schema version of the utility network dataset. See the help topic on utility network compatibility for more information.

Version 7 of the utility network is not currently supported in the ArcGIS Field Maps mobile application. A version 7 utility network will fail to load in Field Maps, and tracing and association viewing will not be available to users. Users will still be able to view and access the network dataset as simple features in Field Maps in a connected map, however, offline capabilities will not be available when working with a version 7 utility network.

Support for utility network version 7 will be available at version 200.5 of the ArcGIS Maps SDK. Field Maps currently uses version 100.15 of the Maps SDK, meaning UN version 7 is not currently supported in Field Maps. Support for version 7 of the utility network cannot be ported back to version 100.15 of the Maps SDK due to the use of 64-bit ObjectIDs in the utility network data model. Field Maps will upgrade to use version 200.5 of the Maps SDK in 2025.

Please follow the guidance below when working with utility networks in ArcGIS Enterprise 11.3.

Creating Utility Networks

When creating and deploying utility networks, it is recommended to use the Utility Network Foundation solutions. Esri has created a new version of the geoprocessing tools included with the solutions that allow users to optionally create a version 6 utility network with the latest data models using ArcGIS Pro 3.3 and ArcGIS Enterprise 11.3.

Use version 3.3.1 or above of the Esri Utility Network Package Tools (untools) when creating a new utility network in ArcGIS Pro 3.3. This version of the tools will allow users to create a version 6 utility network, which is supported by Field Maps and the Maps SDK.

When installing the Esri Utility Network Package Tools (untools) in ArcGIS Pro ensure version 3.3.1 or above is selected. When using the Stage Utility Network tool, select 6 as the Utility Network Version parameter to ensure support within Field Maps and the Maps SDK.

Note: Users may have to create a new clone of their python environment in ArcGIS Pro to see the latest version of the Esri Utility Network Package Tools (untools).

Upgrading Utility Networks

If you have a need to upgrade the version of your utility network (to pick up new capabilities) it’s important to be aware of the version of ArcGIS Pro being used for the process. Utility networks should not be upgraded past version 6 to avoid lack of support in Field Maps and the runtime.

Use ArcGIS Pro 3.1 when upgrading your utility network. This version of ArcGIS Pro is supported under the network management release plan and is compatible with ArcGIS Enterprise 11.3. Using ArcGIS Pro 3.1 will update the utility network to version 6, which is supported by Field Maps and the Maps SDK.

Caution: Do not use ArcGIS Pro 3.3 when upgrading your utility network datasets. Using ArcGIS Pro 3.3 will update the utility network to version 7 and will not be supported in Field Maps or the Maps SDK.
