Modifying the grid index features layer

hi, im trying to modify the grid index features layer in order to create data driven pages and im following for this the steps of desktop help . at step 8 it says "Enter 600 for Field Length and click OK". the problem is now, that the maximum length of a text field ist 254. if i continue to step 9 and calculate the utm zone, it obviously doesnt work.

any ideas how to get around this?

Uli,

You can use a filegeodatabase for this exercise.  You will not encounter the field size character limit using a filegeodatabase.
