I am running ArcGIS Explorer 1200 build on my computer. I try to add layers and layer packages and I get the error "Failed to add layer package......Invalid File" I tried several times recreating the layer file in arcmap and i get the same error.

I have also tried adding just the shapefile and then symbolizing as one would so in arcmap but it doesnt seem to have this capability. Has anyone experienced similar issues?

I am among the group of people with issues loading files in Explorer 10.  I started with a blank map in Arcmap 10 (no SP1) and added 1 layer from an Excel sheet of points.  It exports to a layer package with no problems.  However when trying to load in Explorer 1500 I get "invalid file".  It does this with several layers and layer packages.

Hey, sorry for bumping a zombie thread.  Has anyone come up with a solution for this?  I'm not an ArcView operator, I just have a layer file that I'd like to look at and check out regarding its interactive "links" (not sure what they're properly called).  This isn't a complex file, it's just some map points with information attached (owner of property name, history of site, state, city, lat/longs, T/S/R, that sort of thing).

I have a .lyr file created for me by our GIS operator.  I just want to open it in ArcGIS Explorer and click on some of the features and see how it works so that I can send a few screenshots to a client etc.  I'm using ArcGIS Explorer 1500, and the GIS operator used ArcMap 10.0 to create the original files.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have access to the shapefiles as well, or just the .lyr file?  The .lyr file just designates how the .shp file will look.  If your GIS person created the .lyr file, but you don't have access to the .shp file on thier computer, or a common server, then it will not open in explorer.  You need the files in the sames location as the GIS person has them in order for it to load.  Another option is to have them zip all the files and open them using ArcGIS.com and make map.  It will load the file as a zip file on the map if thier are not too many points.  (automatically opens the shapefile out of the zip file).  Good Luck.....
