Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew if it were possible to edit the print templates in ArcGIS explorer. We need to insert a copyright on ant maps printed to comply with the licensing of the data from the supplier.

ArcGIS explorer would be an excellent product for us, but until we can insert a copyright on any printouts we cant use it

Thanks

Margo,

Are you planning to post your print Add-In on ArcGIS.com - it would be great to see it in action?

Many thanks for the feedback regarding legends - we will certainly consider it for a future release of ArcGIS Explorer.

Regarding retrieving legend images in the current API - unfortunately that's going to be difficult as there isn't one single approach you can take. FeatureLayers (Shapefile / Geodatabase / GeoRSS / Graphics & Notes) have a FeatureRenderer/Symbol property on which you can call GetSymbol to obtain a symbol image and get a BitMap. Unfortunately Layer Files and Layer Packages (PackageLayers / Package ChildLayers in the API) do not have an equivalent. For map services you'll need to go via the SOAP or REST API of ArcGIS Server to get the map service legend information.

Regards

Mike

I understand this thread is fairly old, but I would also like to add my voice to those needing some way to display a legend on printed maps, as well as on presentations.

It really hard to prepare presentations using the data on-line without having a legend displayed....

Thanks

I am also very disappointed that AGX cannot print a proper map. As far as I can tell it simply dumps the current view as a bitmap and sends it to the printer.

What I want to be able to do is set the screen view and printer view independently. Specfically I want to be able print a large map with large geographic extents on a plotter while retaining small text sizes.

Currently if I try to print a map with large extents (Say a map of Canada) on a plotter, all the text would just be correspondingly large, cluttered, and useless as a map.

Many GIS users are waiting to use ArcGIS ArcExplorer until ESRI has made significant improvements the following items:

Printing
Legends
Labeling

A workaround for adding a legend to a printed map is to set up your ArcExplorer window the way you'd like it to appear (make sure the Contents window is visible), press "ALT" - "PrtScn" and paste the captured window into an image editing application (I use Irfanview).  From here you can crop the area you want to print and add any content that can't easily be added in ArcExplorer.  See the attached/inserted image as a simplified example.

Mike:  Thank you for the support you have provided in your recent posts.
