Print quality changes when exporting or printing ArcGIS layouts

Hi everyone,

I've run into a strange issue while printing map layouts from ArcGIS Pro.

Everything looks great in the Layout view, but after printing, some of the labels appear slightly blurry, colors look less vibrant than expected, and thin grid lines aren't as sharp as they appear on screen. The exported PDF also looks fine, so I'm starting to think the problem might be related to the printer rather than the map itself.

So far I've tried:

  • Exporting at 300 DPI and 600 DPI
  • Updating the printer driver
  • Printing from both the PDF and directly from ArcGIS Pro
  • Disabling image compression during export

Before printing more copies, I ran a printer test page to check whether the issue was with the printer's color output or alignment. That actually helped me confirm the printer needed calibration rather than there being a problem with the ArcGIS layout. I used this free online test page tool.

I'm curious how others handle this. Do you have a standard workflow for checking printer calibration before printing maps or large-format layouts? Any tips for getting more consistent print quality from ArcGIS Pro would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey @TomMiles

What's the make and model of the printer you're using? Sometimes I have seen that non-enterprise printers will have trouble with quality of prints because the DPI of the print itself is much lower than the pixel count on the actual reference imagery, which would cause the printed pixels to merge, not super good.

Do you have another printer that you could test with, or maybe take it to a nearby library to try out? It's hard to phase out the possibility that this could be a transmission or print settings issue with just a single printer to test.
