Viewing data on internal server from the web

I am looking for opinions on how to create a connection from the web to an internal ArcGIS Server Service or a Sql database.

I would like to view and edit data on our internal server from an external website.   (such as having a public citizen edit a pothole feature class on our website).

We have all our data on a server in a sql database, we have a web server with ArcGIS Server 10.2 and and internal ArcGIS  Server with 10.2.

Options we have been looking at:

Reverse proxy on our external web server?

and/or using the web adapter to bridge the 2 servers?

Here's the problem I can use all this terminology but when it comes down to it I don't know where to go to make these connections or what to type if I find it.

Thanks in advance for any help you might have.

Hi Jessica,

If your web-server has a public IP, you could configure web-adaptor (with ArcGIS Server) on the web-server machine.
