Do Portal for ArcGIS and ArcGIS Server machines communicate directly or through their Web Adaptors?

I'm trying to piece together a diagram of the communication that takes place between the various ArcGIS Enterprise components for our IT Dept. It seems like such a simple question, but how do Portal and Server communicate and through which ports? Is it A, B, or something else.

*Assumptions: All components are on separate machines except Web Adaptors are together; Web Adaptors are in DMZ; Portal, Server, Data Store are on internal network.

It depends who built and configured it.  Typically portal speaks to servers on 6443 and vice-versa on 7443.

I build with web adaptors so it’s all 443.

it really does depend.

By the way.  The hosting server and portal also communicate to the data stores on a selection of ports.  Most of that is ODBC type traffic rather than  web, so web adaptors don’t help.  If you build a more extensive deployment with additional server roles then if only increases.
