10.2.2 and SQL 2012: Geography Storage Format Does not Work

A fresh install of SQL 2012, Arc SDE/Server 10.2.2., Arc Map 10.2.2. Create a new feature class and select "Geography" as the configuration keyword, GCS_North_American_1983 as the CS.

Get the following error when attempt to view, or use, the FC.

Please try re-calculating the extent for that empty SQL Server geography feature class and check if that helps.

We saw the same error when under this same configuration, is there a reason for this behavior?
