Update URL in Web Map Layer without AGO Assistant

In Portal, I have a web map with a layer that I added using the Add from URL option; it is a rest service URL from Cityworks. 

I'd like to change the url without deleting / add and removing the old one since I already set up pop-ups and other properties. It seems like I can do this using the AGO Assistant, but I'm wondering how to accomplish this without the assistant?

Have you tried Update ArcGIS Server site references in the Webmap item's settings? There are some caveats to use this, but if you meet the requirements, it's an easy way to update the underlying service reference.
