I am trying to label some roads with a simple expression and I keep getting a "The expression contains an error. Modify the expression and try again" alert. I am only trying to label a "NAME" field and a "TYPE" field. I can't for the life of me figure out what the error is since I have used the expression many times before on different installations/versions. I am currently using ArcMap 10. The expression syntax I am using is:

[NAME] & " " & [TYPE]

Is there something going on with the application itself?

Please help.

Thanks,

The expression you have is formatted correctly. I recommend opening a new blank MXD and adding that layer to the map. Try to label using your expression using the [NAME] & " " & [TYPE] expression you have used already.

I tried that with no success. I am beginning to think something is wrong with the software and not the data file (i.e. missing install files, missing service packs, etc.) I tried using various expressions with different data sets and got the same results.

Any other ideas or suggestions?
