Hello,

My team is tasked with creating and maintaining aerodrome charts, specifically Instrument Approach Procedure (IAP) charts.
While reviewing the ArcGIS Desktop documentation, I found clear instructions for creating IAP profile views with the Aviation Charting extension:
https://desktop.arcgis.com/en/arcmap/latest/extensions/aviation-charting/preparing-the-database-for-...

However, I'm struggling to find equivalent documentation for ArcGIS Pro. This leads me to a few questions:

  1. Does the ArcGIS Pro Aviation Charting extension support the creation of IAP profile views?
  2. To accomplish this, is the Aviation Charting extension the only product needed, or is the Airports extension also required?
  3. Based on this requirement, would you recommend we invest in the ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Pro product line?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,
Roy

Hi Roy,

ArcGIS Aviation Charting does not yet have an automated way to create the approach profile graphic in ArcGIS Pro.  However, this capability is on our roadmap for the near future.  In the meantime, our recommendation is to include profiles as graphics in the layout or construct them manually using Pro’s drawing tools.

To answer your other questions: ArcGIS Aviation Charting would be the only extension needed for terminal procedure charting.  Also, we would recommend getting started with ArcGIS Pro over ArcGIS Desktop.  ArcGIS Desktop is actually no longer sold since it enters the Retirement phase of the product lifecycle early next year.

Hi Kiyoshi,

Thank you so much for the clear and direct answer. This is exactly the confirmation my team was looking for.

We really appreciate you suggesting the workaround using manual drawing tools, and it's great to hear that an automated capability is on the roadmap. This helps us plan our next steps.

Thanks again for your guidance.

Best regards,
Roy
