Hi folks! My name is Allison. I've been doing GIS 'things' since graduating college in 2016. Sadly for me, none of those things have led me on the path to learning arcgis development. I'd like to extend the capabilities of the arcgis platform and create some seriously useful and easy to use apps for people I know who would use them if they were designed correctly. Also, I just really love to learn. So, where can I find the starter courses I'd need to get my feet wet? Not alot of prior experience with HTML, CSS, or Javascript, but I think if I had those skills down then this whole thing would be easier for me to learn right? Should I start with those fundamentals then move on to learn GIS development? Can it happen simultaneously?

Appreciate any help!

Hi Allison,

You can find just about any course on udemy:

https://www.udemy.com

There's also one tailored for ArcGIS:

There are some great free options out there too.

JavaScript

https://www.codecademy.com/learn/introduction-to-javascript

HTML/CSS

https://www.freecodecamp.org/learn/responsive-web-design/

ArcGIS API for JavaScript

https://developers.arcgis.com/javascript/latest/display-a-map/

Edit: The ones listed above are interactive and walk you through coding step by step. Udemy is great if you enjoy lectures, it really depends on an individual's learning style.

Thanks Ben! I'm working on the freecodecamp right now matter of fact. I think I'm more of an interactive learner. Lectures are also great if there's interactivity, which many are. I've got a few Udemy classes I need to catch up on.  You know, ESRI does such a great job of teaching with their training, but I do feel like you have to know a lot of programming stuff before you get into it. It just wasn't in my curriculum when I graduated 4 years ago, or I didn't choose these electives. Wish I would have now! Employers aren't willing to teach these skills, you've got to come prepared. And that's probably because there's a TON of resources out there to learn on your own. Just got to know the right track I suppose. Appreciate the assist!

Glad I could help! This post was moved into the JavaScript section, so if you still have .NET questions I suggest posting separately in those communities as well.
