Very impressive on 3D capabilities of ESRI LAS Dataset tool.
From our practice, however, it is good to share the two key concepts related to LAS Dataset. And also worth to encourage ESRI rethinking the tools of LAS Dataset, even rewriting the relevant helps:
? As well known, LAS file as Point Clouds is an open standard, which is derived from airborne LIDAR technique.
However, it is not just applicable to airborne LIDAR data. In other words, any geospatial 3D data (including data from stereo-pair images) can also be optimized in ESRI ??LAS Dataset??, as long as those 3D datasets are represented in LAS format;
In fact, we are frequently using ESRI LAS Dataset to visualize and analyze terrains in LAS (with/without 3D features like buildings, trees, etc), which are derived from stereo-pair GeoEye and airphoto. So, it is advisable to mention inside http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/015w/015w00000057000000.htm
? For the best performance, the main affect is the workstation memory (rather than the limitation of LAS Dataset tool itself).
