Hello everybody,

i´am looking for a tool, which i can use for simulating a lake-outburst-flood. So the idea is to expect one point, where the whole watervolume gets free and flood a valley, which should be illustrated by GIS. Can anybody advise a way or a tool to do it? I searched for it the whole weekend, but without any success.

Thank you very much for every idea!!!! 🙂

The proper way would be to learn-use Hec-Ras (http://www.hec.usace.army.mil/software/hec-ras/).

If you just want to dabble you could experiment with these (unverified-not QA'd) detrending tools available here:
ftp://lnnr.lummi-nsn.gov/GIS_Scripts/

I don't have any help documentation outside the toolbox tools so feel free to write if you need help.

Hi Marcel,

You are dealing with 2 separate issues:
1. Is how to model/simulate the lake outburst?
2. After you have modeled the hazard, how to display/visually present it in a GIS (animation/time series, whatever)?

For modeling water flow over DEMs....several software exist, some of them might have capability of also visualizing the process after you have modeled the outburst.
Here is a good link of a list of modeling software (some if not most are freely available) for natural hazards:

Good luck!
