Hello, I know it's been awhile since the original post, but I just came across this comment and figured I'd add to the conversation since it seems like this can be done with the built-in toolboxes quite simply. The "Add Geometry Attributes" tool has an option to calculate the "LINE_BEARING", described as "The start-to-end bearing of the line. Values range from 0 to 360, with 0 meaning north, 90 east, 180 south, 270 west, and so on." Here's the docs for more info: Add Geometry Attributes—Help | ArcGIS Desktop Hopefully this helps someone out there, Cheers, Ben

That's great to hear Katie! Can you elaborate further on what you mean when you say you "added it as acceptable" to the firewall? Is that an ESRI server that's being whitelisted, or a port that's being opened... or some other firewall thing that I'm not familiar with (which is most of them)? Thanks, Ben

I've got this same problem as well, started in 1.0 and still present in version 1.2 ArcGIS Earth seems like it could be a great addition to our workflow, especially when all our Desktop licenses are in use and staff just need to reference a shapefile or add annotation. But it's a pretty hard sell to colleagues when the startup image depicts some sort of global catastrophe...

Hi Dan, Thanks for the reply! Now that I'm aware of this problem, I'm naming the .mxds similar to your suggestion. It's unfortunate that there's no way to identify the version of a file, or automatically deal with older versions either by creating multiple files on save or maintaining older version saves. Cheers, Ben

Hello, I've recently upgraded to ArcGIS Desktop 10.3, but many of my colleagues are using 10.1 or 10.2. They've let me know of this error they get when they try to open any map .mxd I've worked on: "This map document was saved using a newer version of ArcGIS." Following the directions in the error message (see attached), I "Save A Copy" to the older file format and they are able to open the file OK. However, I've noticed that if I open the legacy copy and save it, it reverts back to the 10.3 file format. I've got two questions related to this process: 1) Is it possible to identify which version of ArcGIS a file is saved in? I don't see it in the map document properties when viewed from ArcCatalog. 2) Is it possible to set ArcMap 10.3 to automatically or by default save .mxd files in an older version, such as 10.2? I'm new to ArcGIS, so forgive me if this is an issue that has a long history over the many version changes in the past. Thanks, Ben

Hello Theo, I'm in a situation where I have the exact same need - exporting the connectivity table from a geometric network. I'm curious how you ended up solving your problem. Did you go with the VB Code, or a similar python script? Or perhaps there's a newer solution that's come up in the last three years. Thanks, Ben
