Ana, thank you for your reply. Yes I can communicate with a ESRI Representative about this issue. Since it's not a problem with software it will be more of a discussion on if it's possible to implement what my superior wants. I am working from home so it would be better to reach me through the Geonet forum or the email listed in my profile. Thanks.

Shane thanks for the reply. One thing I noticed with your list, and am very intrigued about, was your order of installation. I have a colleague that took their online class during the summer and the order they went through was Portal, Web Adaptor, Server, Web Adaptor, and Data Store . When I installed the software I loaded Server before Portal but followed their class course book exactly with the rest of installation and still had issues. Also, the course book had you Federate the system before you installed Data Store which seemed odd to me and that's when the "Sign In" window popped up and I couldn't really do anything until I shared everything with everyone. One thing that I have never got a straight answer to over the years is the host file for the Windows system. Should I add anything to it or leave it in it's default state? For example the default is as: # localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself. # 127.0.0.1 localhost # ::1 localhost Should I add anything, such as the machine IP: 10.10.112.27 www.webserver.xxx.xxx Lastly, you have in your list the phrase Ingest root, what does that mean. I'm a Geographer and all the software and system administration has been dumped into my lap so there are terms that I'm not sure about. I have probably completed that task; I just may have called it the "thingamajig". So I guess the point I'm making is I've used ESRI documentation, an ESRI training class course book, and installed ArcGIS Enterprise six ways from Sunday and still had problems. I've loaded the correct CA Certificate with IIS with no problems, I have external and internal communication to the server with no problems. I even let their ESRI Builder app install it for me and it always failed so it is seems there is always an OS issue that I may need to address. Thanks again for your help, your list has provided insight. I may install the software on a test server using your order to see how it goes.

I have loaded ArcGIS Enterprise many times on a virtual server and have always had issues arise. An example of one issue is after being installed and configured it suddenly cannot reach a webpage (Portal or Server). Another issue I have seen is after I log into Portal and go to Settings it pops up a "Sign in" window and none of my usernames or passwords work. I recently overcame the Sign in issue by giving privileges to "Everyone". It worries me a bit because in the back of my mind I'm wondering if the software is going to come crashing down because I forgot to set something correctly. I am not asking for help on a particular installation but I would like to see if I can get a checklist for installing ArcGIS Enterprise for future reference. I have Windows Server 2019 standard edition with IIS version 10 and I'm going to load ArcGIS Enterprise 10.8. What do I need do, or set, with the OS before installing the software (Portal, Server, the works)? Then after the software is installed is there anything else I should be aware of with the software and OS? Thanks in advance. Checklist Install a CA Signed SSL certificate for https. Receive appropriate license for software (in my case a .prvc for Server and .json for Portal)

My organization is setting up an ArcGIS Enterprise Portal. We have our own licenses to allow users in my organization to access the Portal. My boss wants to give local and state governments access to our Portal so that they have a place to put their data so that they can share and work with other agencies. My question is right now my organization has it's own license to use Portal. Is it possible to make it to where when they log into our ArcGIS Enterprise Portal it uses these other local and state entities ESRI licenses? I'm not even sure how to set up something like this. Should I create new members, groups, or what??? I'd appreciate any guidance.

Eric, I'm sorry but I'm just now seeing your post. I had surgery in August so everything work related was put on hold. I was never able to join the two machines together but I had another post and somebody wrote the following: Craig touch on it where the first machine was set up using Enterprise Builder. The ArcServer on Machine one is a Hosted Server for the Data Store. You can not Join Machine 2 Arc Server to Machine 1 Arc Server because it is already a hosted server. The Arc Server on Machine 2 is an Image Server. You would not Join to an existing site but create a new one on machine 2. With that said you probably want to federate the machine 2 server to the Portal you have on machine 1. Once the Machine 2 server is all set up and working that is when you will federate the server to make it a part of the Portal. I am currently installing Enterprise on just one machine for now and my little organization will go with that for now.

I ran the following test on machine name, IP, and DNS alias: Test-NetConnection -ComputerName <DESTINATION SERVER> -Port 6443 When I ran the test, machine name and IP succeeded but on the DNS alias it failed on TcpTestSucceeded came back as False. Is there something in Server Manager (maybe?) that I need to turn on to allow TCP for the DNS Alias? I believe I have the shared folder and SSL configurations set correctly as per ESRI's recommendations. Thanks for the help and information.

I've been dealing with this problem for a while and have even asked questions on here about it but I have not found a solution yet. I want to setup a multi-machine deployment on two virtual servers (Windows Server 2019); Machine1 - Portal, ArcGIS Server, Data Store, Web Adaptor (I used Builder to install all software) Machine2 - ArcGIS Server with Image Server license (just used ArcGIS Server installation software) Everything loads fine, it's just when I load ArcGIS Server on Machine2 and it asks if I want to "Create a New Site" or "Join an Existing Site" I get the following error: Failed to join the site 'https://MACHINE1:6443/arcgis/admin/'. Server machine 'https://MACHINE1:6443/arcgis/admin//machines/register' returned an error. 'Admin URL 'https://MACHINE2.GIS.COM:6443/arcgis/admin' is not reachable from 'MACHINE1.GIS.COM'. I've done multiple installations (wipe the machine and start over) and always receive this error. I've created Inbound and Outbound rules to open every port that ESRI recommends on both servers. I have a CA-Signed SSL certificate for both servers. Both servers have a Fully Qualified Doman Name. I can ping each server. I can view the default IIS webpage from each server. I'm using the same ESRI license files for each server. I'm using the same version of ArcGIS Server on each machine (10.8). Basically, I've done everything I know to join Machine2 to the existing site on Machine1. My question - is there anything else, no matter how trivial, that I should look at when setting up the servers. I feel it is a server issue that I'm overlooking, something very simple. For example, should I worry about the Host file?? Any information would be appreciated.

Dennis, Thanks for the quick response and answering my questions. I do have local accounts (arcgis) set on both machines with the same password. Also, for Question 5 about the Unable to Connect, this happened after I patched ArcGIS with their built in update software. Before I patched, I was able to get to manager (with the Create Site/Join existing site) but then I forgot that I had patched the software on ER-MARISS1 so I closed the browser and patched the software on ER-MARISS2. After that I couldn't connect. Confusing. I researched it for about 2 days before deciding to just reinstall. One last note, when all this started I thought that maybe I needed Web Adaptor installed on ER-MARISS1 which I did, should I uninstall it or does it matter? I just received your reply about the keycodes files. I checked and there is only one keycode file in that directory. I ran into that problem about two weeks ago and resolved that issue. I was trying to remember what I did but had forgotten, thanks for reminding me. That brings up a question, should I remove that keycode file and reauthorize the software? Maybe on both servers? Thanks, Craig

This is my second question/discussion about ArcGIS Enterprise, the first involved licensing issues which was insane but got past it by almost performing a complete machine wipe. I've cut and paste all the pertinent information from my first post. I have two virtual servers (Windows Server 2016): (these virtual servers reside at another agency so a refresh can be done but is very difficult because of red tape) ER-MARISS1 ER-MARISS2 I followed ESRI's web help page (Configure a multiple-machine deployment) to setup my multiple machine servers. I shared a directory on ER-MARISS1 (E:\ArcGISserver) which contains the config-store and directories called: \\ER-MARISS1\ArcGISserver I mounted this directory on both machines. (Yes, I even mounted it to the machine where the directory exists) Both machines have ArcGISserver (\\ER-MARISS1) (Z:) in their Network Locations. I installed ArcGIS Server software (ArcGIS_Server_Windows_1071_169677.exe) onto ER-MARISS1. I authorized it with the Software Authorization Wizard using the following license file: EducationSiteArcGISServerEnterprise_ArcGISServer_889234.prvc I created a new site on ER-MARISS1 pointing to the \\ER-MARISS1\ArcGISserver directory. I then installed ArcGIS Server software using the same install file onto ER-MARISS2 and authorized it with the Software Authorization Wizard using the same license file. Using the ArcGIS Server Setup Wizard on ER-MARISS2, I'm trying to join to the ArcGIS Server on ER-MARISS1 using the Join Existing Site option. The Specify Site URL window opened and I entered the following information. ArcGIS Server site URL: https:\\ER-MARISS1:6443 (it said to use the machine name) I supplied the administrator username and password for the ArcGIS Server site, which is the same on both machines. A popup window opens displaying the following information: Configuration Summary Your ArcGIS Server installation is ready to be completed. Click Finish to join the site https://ER-MARISS1:6443 I clicked Finish and receive the following error: Failed to join the site 'https://ER-MARISS1:6443/arcgis/admin/'. Server machine 'https://ER-MARISS1:6443/arcgis/admin//machines/register' returned an error. 'Admin URL 'https://MARIS-S2.GIS.MS.GOV:6443/arcgis/admin' is not reachable from 'MARIS-S1.GIS.MS.GOV'. For more information, see the ArcGIS Server help topic "About adding a GIS server to a site". You can access this topic in the table of contents by navigating to Administering ArcGIS Server > Common administrative tasks > Adding a GIS Server to a site.' I can ping both servers from one another and they do see each other. I have a couple of questions: (I know I'm asking a lot) Should I create a site on each machine and then add ER-MARISS2 to ER-MARISS1 using ER-MARISS1's Manager software? Should I NOT create a new site on ER-MARISS2 and just choose the Join Existing Site option? If so, how do I overcome the above error? I noticed that the server directories (config-store, directories) located on ER-MARISS1 share to the arcgis user on ER-MARISS1 but there is nothing about the user on ER-MARISS2. Is this a problem? Is there anything with the both systems I should be on the lookout for, especially IIS? In the past, After updating ArcGIS Server software, I've had ER-MARISS2 suddenly give me an "Unable to Connect" to both localhost and the URL when starting Manager, is there something I need to change? Why does the ArcGIS Patch Notification software only install one patch at a time even though all the patches have a checkmark? The software disappears after only install one patch and I have to restart the software and do each patch individually. What ESRI classes (online or classroom) should I take to make me an expert, below are things I would like to know? System config (Windows Server, IIS) for ArcGIS Enterprise ArcGIS Enterprise software installation ArcGIS Enterprise administration (Portal, Server, and Datastore) Data input (Raster and Vector) Portal Webpage development and any other that would be important My personal opinion and rant: Thankfully this isn't a production site because I've installed (and uninstalled) this software many, many times in various configurations (Portal, Datastore, just server, etc...). I've used the individual software executables and also used the Builder program and it seems that there is always a problem. I can only do what the software lets me do. At one point I thought I had Portal working (creating a Portal website, etc...) and I performed a simple Windows Server update and it killed the software, nothing worked. I've been using ESRI products for 30 years and have never seen this many problems. I think I prefer writing AMLs with old ArcInfo on a UNIX workstation. Thanks.

UPDATE (April 20, 2020): I found online where someone mentioned checking the keycode files on their machines under: C:\Program Files (x86)\ESRI\License10.7\sysgen I opened the keycode files and noticed they were different. I had, at one time, arcgis server loaded on these virtual machines but because of some unknown problem causing it to not work anymore I had to uninstall and remove all traces of ArcGIS Server but must have forgotten to remove these keycode files. That's usually the case with ArcGIS Server software, it'll just spontaneously stop working. Anyway, I deleted the keycode files and re-activated using the same license file. Same error as before so I checked the files and noticed the codes in the new keycode files were still different. So I just removed the keycode file from the second machine and copied and pasted the keycode from the first machine so they would be exact. It still doesn't work, it comes up with the same message saying I have two different license files. I have no idea. I will continue looking online.
