Hi, Thanks for the reply. I tried a similar thing with remove !d_material!.replace("in",("").replace("mm",""). I became stuck though because I only need to multiply the inches e.g. 2in, 4in, 15in by 25.4 and leave the milimeter (mm) ones alone in that caluclation. I didn't know how to do that though. Seems like I need a else if statement, but not sure how to contruct one. The int function is very good to know thanks. A sample of my data with the column datatype is shown below: Any ideas?

Hello, I am very new with python so have been really struggling with the field calculator for what seems like a simple task. (it is in excel anyway) I have a shapefile with a column named d_diameter, but this column is String and contains entires; 100mm, 2in,4in, 70in, 50mm, 73mm etc. I am looking to convert these to numbers, specifically to milimeters (mm) and to 2 decimal points. So ones with "mm" extension, I just want the number. Entries with the "in" extension in I want this removed and the value timesed (*) by 25.4 to convert it to mm. e.g. 100mm becomes 100 and 2in becomes 50.8 etc The kicker is sometimes it has NULL values, or Text "Other" or "Unknown". Ideally I want in these cases for it to come through as NULL. Any idea or input where to start would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Thomas

Hi, I've tried a few examples giving to people asking a similar question , but haven't managed to get any of them to work using the field calculator. I basically have a shapefile with a field named "d_material" which contains the following entries: DI - Ductile Iron HDPE - High Density Polyethylene HPPE - High Performance Polyethylene CI - Cast Iron MDPE - Medium Density Polyethylene SI - Spun Iron uPVC - Unplasticised Poly Vinyl Chloride It also contains Null/blank cells I'm trying to use the field calculator to remove text so I only end up with: DI HDPE HPPE CI MDPE SI uPVC Blank fields stay blank I know its possible, but haven't managed to get it working. Any help would be great thanks. I'm running ArcMap v10.2.1 for desktop. Regards, Thomas

Interesting, I didn't think to approach the problem this way. I am going to share my tool to the business I work at for others to use. I have converted my terrain dataset to raster with the idea to supply the raster file to users. Using this raster my tool essentially locates highest elevation within a polygon(s) area by using this method https://support.esri.com/en/technical-article/000011761 I've created a model to automate all the steps and added some additional customization e.g. It will also allow the user to define which polygon to use by a SQL (default mode = it will locate the highest elevation point for each polygon and create a point for each).

Just coming back to say thanks for the help. All sorted now and have built a model to automate the process of obtaining the highest elevation point within polygons. Converts the results to a point layer containing elevation and coordinates. Cheers again

Thanks again. It looks like the Terrain 5 layer I'm trying to use is not compatible with this tool as I am not getting that pulldown arrow next to "Input value raster". (I should of said I'm on Arcmap 10.2.1). I've had a look Terrain 5 layer source and the layer is in SDE Terrain format. I haven't got much experience with this format, will it be possible to use this dataset to achieve the above? Will I need to use another tool / combination of tools to accomplish it? Thanks again

Thanks for your reply, I'll try this out and get back to you. Think I will have to mosaic a lot of rasters, as its an entire Country (Scotland). We have a corporate .mxd we use and this links to the Terrain 5 dataset for whole of Scotland which is stitched together. I can't get access to this file directly however. Is there anyway I can reference the Terrain 5 layer in my Arcmap view within the .mxd and run this tool? The "input raster value" box seems to want to select a file from your hard drive. Apologies if I'm missing the obvious here.

Hello, This maybe be a stupid question/simple answer scenario. I have a Terrain 5 dataset (OS Terrain 5 – height DTM and contour data ), existentially an ASCII grid. Its loaded in my ArcMap as point, line and area layer. I am looking to extract the highest point within a polygon. For example I create a polygon shapefile around a section of town and then want to find the highest point (location X,Y) within this polygon I've drawn. Is this possible to do this just using this shapefile and Terrain 5 dataset? Can I use a standard toolbox tool for this, or does it require a few more steps? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards,
