Looking forward to diving into some of these new features. I just downloaded and installed the new version (3.6.137) and wanted to play with some of the new options (grid theme, table-list etc) on an existing survey because we'll likely want to incorporate a few of them on it. I created a new survey from the existing one, but when I open the XLSForm, none of the new options are there. I had thought that since I am using the new version of the software, the XLSForm would automatically open with the updated setup but that doesn't seem to be the case. Is there any way I can fix this without recreating the whole thing? Thanks!

I just finished the Automating Workflows using ArcGIS Pro Tasks web course and I'm trying to create a Task for a current workflow. The course had an example where one task step embeds the Select tool to grab a trail segment and saves that selection to a variable called Trails for use in the next step, where Select by Location is embedded. Everything worked perfectly in the training data. I'm trying to do a very similar thing and created an identical task step with Select embedded, and Additional Actions set up to clear the selection when starting the step and Save Features or Records currently selected into a variable I called CopyFeatures. In the next step, I'm trying to figure out how to take that selection and export them out to a new file that I need to reproject (need to change the coordinate system so I can then copy/paste those features into an AGOL layer). I set the step, using Record, to the Feature Class to Feature Class tool but when I go to the Input and click on the dropdown, I see all the layers in my Contents Pane but not the variable. I thought maybe using variables doesn't work with that particular tool, so I tested setting the next step to Select by Location, mimicking the web course setup, and again, when I go to Selecting Features and click the dropdown, it shows me all the layers but NOT the variable. I DID save after each step. I even went back to the actual ESRI Training data used in the web course, and in THAT project, I modified the task steps to use a different variable name and went through to see if that new name showed up (figured maybe there's some settings on that aprx that I'm missing on mine) but it doesn't. Am I missing something on how the variables work?? This seems like such a simple thing but I can't get it to function. Any tips/ideas would be super helpful. Thanks! Tara

Hi Brian, We've just realized that this is happening with our data as well. I think the duplication was there for awhile but it wasn't caught. This is on first time sync of the data down from AGOL. Were you ever able to figure out what the issue was and get a resolution? Thanks, Tara

Just want to update that I was doing some testing and as soon as I took the image question out of the nested repeat and tried to publish the survey it published just fine. So the only problem is having the nested repeat, which is supposed to be working right now. Is having a nested repeat based on an image question a problem? UPDATE: I think I solved it! I remembered that we have a wierd situation with our form in that there are 3 existing repeats within the survey. The second repeat has a geopoint question. We learned that created an issue with the naming of the relationship classes created when it was published. The relationship classes were correctly created but named for the wrong table. Worked with ESRI and discovered that repeats with geopoint questions need to come FIRST when publishing. So workaround was to rearrange the repeats so the geopoint one was first, then publish, then put them back in the order we wanted for the survey and publish again. SOOOO, the nested repeat happens to be on the repeat with the geopoint and when I was publishing I forgot about the whole re-ordering thing. Got me wondering if maybe that was a factor here. So I rearranged the repeats, with the one containing the geopoint and nested repeat first, and tried publishing. It went through with no problem! Just need to put some test data in there and make sure everything is functioning the way we want but it is looking like the issue is resolved.

Ismael Chivite We were very excited to see the incorporation of nested repeats. I just revised our latest survey to include a nested repeat (so the staff can take more than one photo of a rare species, within the rare species observation section of a site survey). I added one new field as well, but those were the only two changes to a survey form that has been working well. When I tried to publish it up though, I keep getting the error below. I thought at first it might be because I was publishing a new functionality in Survey123 to a form created in an older version, so I deleted the old Survey and republished up a new copy of it so it would be a fresh start. I'm getting the same error though. It creates the survey folder, successfully creates the feature service but then fails saying it is unable to add "feature service definition". Any thoughts on what might be happening here?

James Tedrick So I can confirm that when downloading our survey data from AGOL directly, everything works perfectly and the image attachments are there. With both runs of the Sync Script (to file geodatabase and enterprise geodatabase) though, as I describe above, the attachment table relationships didn't work until I deleted them and added them again (named exactly the same and with identical settings). All seemed well until I went to open some of the photos and while it looks at first like everything is there, no photos are actually showing. I see the file name and the attributes but no ability to open and see the image. I had already put in a ticket with ESRI and when the technician and I were working on the issue, he had me try to run the sync again, this time to a fresh file geodatabase. Now suddenly every run of the script creates a new error (see below). He suggested posting here to you to get your input. EDIT: I figured out the error message -> I forgot I had modified the script with a line we needed for input to the correct workspace in SDE and so when I ran it again but to file geodatabase on the network, it threw errors. So we are good on the error message but still curious if you've heard of anyone else having issues with images not coming down with attachment tables? I reran the script just down, to come down to fGDB and again, all the parts are there but the relationships with the attachment tables aren't functioning/being recognized, even though they are present and appear correct, and I can't access the pictures themselves.

Actually Survey123 did create the "UNIQUEROWID" field (just has an alias of RowID) that it was using to store the GUID and all that worked fine. The only place I could see an actual field of Rowid getting created is in the Sync script and when I renamed that, the sync to Oracle DB worked. The wierd thing is that I just went through all the tables/layers and relationship classes for the image attachments (these all use GlobalID and Rel_GlobalID by default) and the values DID match up...the values of the Rel_GlobalID in our s123_Rareobs_Attach table DID actually have a corresponding match in the GlobalID field of the s123_Rareobs point layer. I thought maybe the values were getting changed and that's why the relationship wasn't working. All the info in the relationship class looked correct. On a lark I (in a copy of the data) I deleted the relationship class and remade it, looking exactly as the other did, and suddenly now the relationship is working. Tomorrow I'll test recreating the two relationship classes I'm having a problem with in our actual SDE copy of the data and run the Sync again and see if everything comes down properly. Can't explain why this happened but I'm hoping this will resolve it. So odd!

James Tedrick, Just want to add that I took a copy of the sync tool and went through and changed every instance of ROWID to TEMPROWID and then ran the script on the version of our survey without globalids and it worked......except that the relationship between the image attachment tables and our survey points did not come through properly. The relationship classes between the other feature layers and tables all seem to be working though. Any idea what could be going on?

Hi James, So we had the tool working perfectly when we had switched to publishing the survey without globalids and we were syncing to fGDB on the network. We have a new setup though and we need to sync to an enterprise geodatabase (Oracle ArcSDE environment). When I try to use the sync tool now though I get this error: ========================================== FAIL: Updating Tables exception: An expected Field was not found or could not be retrieved properly. [ROWID] ['An expected Field was not found or could not be retrieved properly. [ROWID]'] <type 'exceptions.RuntimeError'> 575 ============================================ The only thing that has changed is that we are pointing the sync tool to our SDE instance instead of a network fGDB, and we definitely didn't get this error before. I had tried directly copying our fGDB into SDE and got an error message saying that ROWID is a protected field name in Oracle. Wondering if that could be the issue here, that Oracle isn't liking the use of that field name and so won't let us put the data in? I wasn't sure whether the ROWID field is coming from the survey (when I set it to publish without globalids) or your script. Decided to test out the former scenario. I republished my survey WITH GlobalIDs enabled after seeing your response that if the Preserve GlobalIDs environment setting is checked on then the sync tool should work. I got error messages saying The value is not a member of GlobalID though. I looked into it more and it appears that the Preserve GlobalIDs setting is currently only in Pro, and your sync script doesn't run in Pro. I'm at a loss now as to how to get our data into SDE. We were really relying on the ability to use your script to sync down the data/updates. Any thoughts?

Hi Phil, Thanks for checking in. I ended up submitting a ticket for it and it got resolved, but I forgot to post the info here, so here it goes.... The issue was from a bug in Survey123 where if you add a new question, within a repeat, in an already published survey, the updated survey won't publish. The workaround, until the bug is fixed in a future release, is to create a dummy question outside of the repeat, then publish (it will work then) and then you can delete the dummy question and republish. -Tara

I did turn on the error logging and tried to resubmit the survey. The problem I'm running into now is trying to get the ArcGIS folder off our iPad devices. We have multiple iPads set up via the same iTunes account here, which I don't have control over. When I plug the iPad in, iTunes does open up but I can't get to anything in there except music and photos. There's no place I can seem to find files on the device. It is very frustrating. This is all I can access:

Just curious if anyone has had problems submitting surveys since this update was put out? I have 2 staff that are suddenly getting 1003 error codes when submitting surveys on a form that they had no problem using heavily in the days leading up to the update. Starting the day after though, they are getting error 1003 when trying to submit. (I know from other geonet posts that values getting entered into the form that do not match up with allowable inputs on the feature service end can also throw that code, but I find it interesting that no problems existing using the survey prior to the date the update was pushed out so would like to rule out the update as the culprit). If the problem is something in the survey, is there any way to get more detailed info on the error, that might point to what PART of the survey is problematic? There is a lot of important rare species data that we have stuck on these 2 iPads right now, until we get this figured out Thanks, Tara

I made two quick updates to one of my Survey123 forms (I've made many updates to it and had no problems prior to this) about a week ago and since then I've been unable to publish the updated version. When I click on the Publish button in Connect, it successfully goes through Checking Feature Service and then brings up a dialog box letting me know the survey has already been published and that it sees I'm trying to add a field not already present. I click on the button to "Add the following fields when publishing" and then click on "Publish Survey". At that point it just hangs and nothing happens. I found a post where someone had a similar issue and you said to go to the Survey123 Connect settings and turn on logging. I did so and am attaching the log file. That post also asked the user if the form item was removed or changed location. I did notice at some point that my FS and form item were not in the Survey123 folder and moved it back there. I'm pretty sure I've successfully published updates since then. On the off chance I was mis-remembering, I put them back and tested it again but it still hung. Any thoughts? Tara Boswell

Great information here, thank you! We are still struggling with this as we need to create unique report numbers for each rare species point collected in our Rare Species Observation Survey (built in Survey123 Connect). These report numbers are used: - to easily reference a collected record when staff are conversing about it e.g. data staff needs a biologist to get more info for them on an observation they submitted - to easily be able to navigate spatially to specific rare species observations e.g. one staff member is qc'ing the work of another and so they need to quickly identify which of many observations by a given coworker they need to work on. - in the name of the 'final copy of record' that we are required to generate for every observation (a report containing a map, all existing photos, plus all attributes) So using a field with Global ID, or even a manually created ID that is really long (full user name plus date plus time) is not ideal. With the old paper submittals we received, we had an auto incrementing number preceded by a letter indicating Animal, Plant, Vertebrate or Invertebrate (e.g. A1234). I understand this is not possible in Survey123 because there are multiple users submitting records and you could very easily have overlap in the numbers BUT what if the user name preceded the auto incrementing numbers e.g. taraboswell0001? EDIT: Ugh nevermind...that wouldn't work, probably for many reasons but guessing once a survey is submitted, when you launch the survey to enter another feature, it has no way of knowing what has been entered before it and so it can't increment the number? Guessing it can only do calculations on values that exist in the form currently open on your device?

Looks like a false alarm James. I think we had a buggy app install on the iPhone. I happened to test it out on the new iPads we got and it worked fine, so my coworker uninstalled both Collector and Survey123 from his iPhone, and then re-installed and tried again, and now he is having no problems. Survey123 stores the data in sql lite database on the phone right? Guessing when the app installed the first time, something glitched with that and the data wasn't able to go in properly. At any rate, just wanted to let you know the problem has resolved, thank goodness!
