Drawing Order - Symbol Placement

Question

Hey,

I'm Kurt, I'm new to Arc and my background is QGIS.

I am regularly working with multiple layers that run off the screen. I want to compress the view of my layers without giving up the symbol type. Wondering if there is a way to move the symbol preview to the right or left of the layer? Picture attached shows what I'm after.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like this is currently possible, but I think that's a great idea and I strongly recommend that you post it on the ArcGIS Ideas page:
