ArcGIS Server 10.1 web app wizard: create maps that can be exported to shapefile

I'm running ArcGIS Server 10.1 on a Windows 2012 server operating system. I have a map service ready to be incapsulated into a
web application that I created using Web Application Manager's wizard
I would then be able to allow users of my webapplication to export the web maps' features into a local shapefile.

Can anyone point me towards examples/tutorials explaining how can I achieve that? I cannot find any.

In case custom programming is required, Java is my reference language (nevertheless, I'm pretty confident there is some other "automated" way to do that, which I am currently missing...)
