Raster buffers vs vector buffers

I am trying to determine the difference between a raster buffer and a vector buffer. I am finding information on raster data (grids) and information on vector data (x,y), and I am finding information on what a buffer is (an area covering a feature such as a point or line, up to some distance), but I am having trouble finding any information on the difference between using buffers with raster data versus vector data. Anyone have information on this?

Have you tried some examples using different cell sizes and distances and compare those to the vector buffer of the same distance?  The differences will become apparent when you overlay the vectors onto the raster and calculate the vector area and the raster areas.
