I am investigating building a map service that our field iOS users could use to inventory items in the field. As I understand it though I need to publish a feature service for those points that ArcGIS Online can view in order to build the map that will be consumed in the iOS application. My concern though is that ArcGIS Online can't see my password protected services so I'd need to publish that feature service with out any user security in place which isn't feasible. Why add security to the ArcGIS Online Maps though groups etc if anyone can just connect directly to the ArcGIS Server? What am I missing?

The iOS API does  support  secure services. Unfortunately, I don't know the details about this, but was able to find this help link:

http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgismobile/10.0/apis/iphone/concepts/index.html#//00pw0000002m000000.htm

Perhaps others on this forum can comment more.

Hope this helps,

Mike

That's great...but I'm talking about the iOS app not the API. I need ArcGIS.com to take secure services so that I can consume my protected services on iPhones using the ESRI app for iOS.

I'd like to do the same thing, but have not found any information about this yet.

If you have your own ArcGIS Server, there is a way to publish mobile maps to it that can be consumed in the iOS app. These maps can have secured services in them. Here is a link to a document:

http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgismobile/10.0/apis/iphone/AppGuide/Maps.pdf

These maps are not hosted in arcgis.com but rather on your own GIS server. I don't know, however, to what extent editing of features is supported. Maybe it just works...maybe someone else who reads this forum can comment...

Hope this helps,

Mike
