The limitation on name values is occurring for all fields, whether they actually are fields or not. This is something that we could look to improve in the future, but it should also be relatively easy to rename the offending question (and update any calculations it is used in).
S123 seems to give it its own name...
My apologies, I read the text of your post and skipped over the title. You are correct that the name is being auto-generated through the publishing process. As a workaround, you can manually edit the name of the field in the XML file (with Survey123 Connect not previewing the form); we can work to address this in the future. It would be helpful if you could file this with Esri Support so that we can keep track of customers reporting this and automate the notification process when addressed.
