Not sure if this is the right place to ask a technical question.

I am unable to publish a web layer from ArcGIS Pro to an online Arc GIS map. I did this before successfully but have no ide why this isn't working now.

Basically, I create a excel file, upload (Add xy data) to ArcGIS Pro, and try to publish as a shared web layer.

I tried different things, and would appreciate any recommendations, tips.

It could have to do with field names, but in this case I think it is more likely that it is the event layer.  The following bug was logged against Pro 2.1 and is fixed in 2.2 coming this summer.

BUG-000110373 Publishing XY Event layer from ArcGIS Pro fails with error “Failed to publish web layer.”

So as Tom suggests in his question above, export the event layer to a feature class and that will publish.

I'm just shooting from the hip here, but, after making the XY Event Layer from the excel, have you then exported the layer to a permanent feature class? And, Pro is much more sensitive to wonky Excel columns that "worked" in Arc, I just had a ts case on this, here's what they said:

"Hi Tom,

It looks like there are several issues with the field names in this spreadsheet. But the good news is that once they are all fixed, this works fine in ArcGIS Pro.

  • There are several duplicate field names, those need to be renamed to unique names so that none match. Yes, ArcMap will add a 1 to the end of the field name but this doesn't work in Pro
  • The field "Private Alleles" has a space in it. We don't allow spaces so please add an underscore to that field name
  • I also noticed a percent sign in one of the field names and some other special characters and took all those out. Only use letters and numbers. Remember that the field name must start with a letter.

That should take care of it for you. Let me know if you have any questions and how it works once you make these changes."

By means of gifting, Kory would be ecstatic if you marked his answer as correct (so other folks with the same problem know it's a legit solution from ESRI), and, I experience holiday-like euphoria every time someone adds their user story and vote to https://community.esri.com/ideas/12258 .
