Best way to handle using Esri basemap when user is offline

So far I've only tested my app on my Windows machine, but it will soon be deployed to iPads.

I'm wondering what happens when I use an Esri basemap, but then the user gets to an area with no coverage. Will the basemap just be white? Or will it look like it's not able to load?

What the best practice way of dealing with this? Should I use the System onlineStateChanged() signal, and remove the basemap when the user is offline? Or does it handle itself?
