'Map Book' Print functionality?

Has anyone worked on a 'Map Book' style widget for AGOL or Portal? the idea being that a user can specify a total coverage area, scale , and page size, and a 'Map book' pdf will be generated?

there are a variety of enhancements that could then be considered, e.g. create index from an existing polygon feature class... etc... but if anyone has worked on the basic functionality it would be great to know.

We are considering creating a geoprocessing service to do so, then calling it throguh the geoprocessing widget...

FYI, there is the Esri Production Mapping for Server extension that enables this capability - which be leveraged in a client application such as Web AppBuilder. The extension includes several geoprocessing services with advanced "map book" style printing options.
