printing issues

printing in arcmap is giving me fits! I have a page layout setup for 30x42 using an HP plotter as the default. Plotter has 2 rolls. It keeps defaulting to roll 1, which is not the size i want, so it keeps wanting to tile my map.  I have  the printer settings to use roll 2, but to no avail. Still wants to tile to smaller roll. Anybody have any printing tips that might help? I would assume that the software would print to the page size that fits. Any help will be greatly appreciate.

I've occassionally had issues printing directly from ArcMap, but have found exporting to PDF first and then printing from Acrobat generally works without a problem.
