How to Include Reservoirs in Model Building using HEC-GeoHMS?

I am using the HEC-GeoHMS to set up a large watershed model. There are 32 reservoirs in the watershed. Has anyone created reservoirs in the GeoHMS process?

Thank you for your help!

My understanding is the GeoHMS does not create reservoirs.

In the work I've done, I create an agreestream feature that goes through the reservoir embankment. This keeps the reservoir depression from filling during the fill sinks process. Then I put a batch point at the intersection of the agreestream and the embankment so that when I deliniate the watersheds I have a watershed and drainage point assocated with the reservoir. After I've create the HMS model, then I add in the reservoir.

If when you say "created reservoirs" you mean "created stage-storage curves" I've not used GeoHMS for that purpose and I suspect you can't use it for that. There could be other tools for that.

Mark,

Thank you for your clarification!

I have created a HMS model using the GeoHMS, but realized it is too much of work to manually insert all those reservoirs. During the Terrain Processing, I already created an AgreeDEM so the reservoirs were not filled. I am going to use the Batch Subbasin Delineation to further delineate subbasins for all reservoir points. When creating those points, what type should I use: outlet or inlet? I was hoping for a reservoir type.

In HMS model, I know I can insert reservoirs at those reservoir joints/points. Do I need to delete those joints and then replace them with reservoirs, or is there anyway to convert/redefine those joints as reservoirs?

For the reservoir routing, I am going to develop stage-storage and storage-discharge relationships using the POND program outside of the HMS model, and then associate them to each reservoir.

I am happy to report back to this Hydro community that reservoirs (HydroNodes) can be automatically created using the latest GeoHMS. I used following process:

1. Create a BatchPoint file to include your reservoirs points.
2. Run Batch Subbasin Delineation Tool to further delineate subbasins for those reservoirs; Those reservoir points will be added into your ProjectPoint layer.
3. Make sure the Type and HyElmType fields in the ProjectPoint layer are populated with "5" and "Reservoir" respectively.

I have received a couple of e-mails indicating my prior post is not very clear and hard to follow. Below is my best try:

1. Use Batch Point Generation Tool to create a point layer containing your reservoir points/locations. Make

sure those points are on the DEM streams.

2. Make sure your point layer has following fields: Descript, BatchDone, and SnapOn. If there are not in your

point file, add them and populate them.

3. Run Batch Subbasin Delineation Tool to further delineate subbasins for those reservoirs; Those reservoir

points will be added into your ProjectPoint layer.

4. Make sure the Type and HyElmType fields in the ProjectPoint layer are populated with "5" and "Reservoir"

respectively.

Please refer to Chapter 8 of the User Manual, Batch Subbasin Delineation.

Hey everyone, I can't find batch subbasin delineation tool.. Is it the same as batch watershed delineation tool or something else?
