I assume you're talking about ArcMap and not a web application. You can only view one data frame at a time within ArcMap. In other words, only one can be active at a time.

George, I see there are separate tools/scripts for deleting geoprocessing history metadata from 9.x and 10.x geodatabases. Which ArcSDE system tables get cleaned out as a result of running these tools/scripts? Is it METADATA, GDB_USERMETADATA, or both?

It's just a possibility, though I would think you'd be getting a connection error if that were the case. Which RDBMS platform (Oracle 11g, SQL Server 2012, etc.)? If you have access to the RDBMS tools such as SQL Server Studio Manager or SQL Developer, then one simple thing to try is to check and see if the account you're using is still connected to the database when the issue in ArcMap occurs again. In other words, when the selection problem happens again, leave ArcMap open and check to see if your session still exists in the database.

Just out of curiosity, what's the backend data store... file geodatabase or an enterprise geodatabase? I'm grasping a bit at straws here, but if you're using an enterprise geodatabase I'm wondering if your session is somehow timing out.

Reaching remote folders is still done using the same method I described... which is to create a connection to a shared UNC path via ArcGIS for Desktop. You cannot gain access to a remote folder, or any folder, by creating a connection to ArcGIS for Server. The edition of ArcGIS for Server (e.g., enterprise or workgroup) makes no difference in this case. Now, when you mentioned the ability to extract data, I immediately started wondering if you might be talking about or might benefit from a geodata service. Take a look at the article and let me know if this is what you are talking about. For a geodata service, you would require an enterprise geodatabase to begin with. Users essentially establish a server connection to your geodatabase over a LAN; there is no need for accessing a remote folder in that case.

Some questions... Which version of Portal are you using? Is this occurring right after installation or did Portal work for, let's say, a few days before failing? Was this Portal instance federated with ArcGIS for Server? If yes, how many servers in the AGS site? Is Portal on a different machine than AcGIS for Server? What is the operating system for the Portal machine? Have you configured the web adaptor for Portal and/or ArcGIS for Server? Have you enabled SSL for Portal? Which account are you using to run the Portal service? Does it have R/W privileges to the arcgisportal directories? Depending on your environment configuration, this article may help as it contains a very similar JMX issue that your error shows.

How complex is the SQL for your query layer? You might be able to generate the table view directly from the table in the database instead, and then make the XY Event Layer... thus bypassing the query layer altogether.

I believe what you're referring to is Single-Sign-On (SSO). SSO for Windows Integrated Authentication will work with ArcGIS for Server but I believe your users and roles all need to come from the same provider. In other words, I don't think you can use a mixed configuration whereby users come from the domain and roles come from the built-in store as an example. You'll want to authenticate users at the web tier rather than the GIS tier. If you're using the web adaptor, configure it to use Windows authentication rather than anonymous authentication within IIS. There shouldn't be a need to enter credentials for users on the domain from that point forward. EDIT: This article provides instructions for making the configuration changes necessary in ArcGIS for Server and in IIS for the web adaptor in order to set up Windows authentication. You'll want to review the following sections: Configuring the ArcGIS Web Adaptor (IIS) to use Windows authentication Configuring ArcGIS Server security to use Windows Active Directory users and roles Reviewing users and roles I'm assuming you're using 10.2.x as your software version.

Thank you for your reply and suggestions, here's some further clearification With respect to Question 1: The latter, does Portal have the capability to parse inside a Word document for geographic names, lat/lons, addresses, etc.? With respect to Question 2: When hosting a Word doc on Portal, is there a way to tag the document so it can be searched by keyword or geographic extent? Your time and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks very much for clarifying. Regarding question 1, I believe the answer is 'no'. Searching Portal for content will only return a result set based on specific details about the document such as owner, title, type, description, etc. In other words, Portal cannot scan inside of a document to find a string or parse it as you described. Regarding question 2, yes absolutely... in fact, tags are one of the best things you can do with your content because it allows you to associate keywords which helps to facilitate Portal's search functionality. Creating tags can be accomplished through Item Details for a particular document, map, layer, etc. that you have uploaded to Portal. Clicking the Edit button within the Item Details section allows you edit the title, summary, thumbnail image, description, access and use constraints, tags, credits, and extent. You can add tags to Items and to Groups. Let me know if this answers your question, and if so, please mark the correct answer with the green check to the right of this post.

From your query layer, try creating a Table View first and then go ahead with making your XY event layer using the table view instead. When I looked at the Esri documentation for the acceptable inputs to generate the XY event layer, a table view was listed as the data type. Give that a shot and post back with your results.

Good Afternoon: Question 1: Can Portal be configured to search Geo-referenced data from MS Word, PowerPoint, etc. ? Question 2: If Yes, is there a standard format that the MS Word, PowerPoint, etc, has to be in? Thank you for your time and suggestions I am a bit confused by your first question. What do you mean by "search Geo-referenced data"? Are you asking if Portal can include MS Office documents in its search results just as with geographic content or are you asking if Portal can literally search inside an MS Office document stored in Portal or are you asking something else? Generally speaking, users can upload and share MS Office documents from within Portal. This section of the Esri help discusses that functionality a bit. I'm also confused by your second question. What do you mean by "standard format"? On the other hand, you might be asking if users can search Portal's geographic content from within MS Office applications. If that's the case, then the answer is 'yes, somewhat'. Esri Maps for Office loosely integrates MS Excel and MS PowerPoint with Portal for ArcGIS in that you can create maps from shared content on Portal or uploaded content. This functionality is not available in MS Word.

The application randomly picks default symbology colors each time you add new data to your map. You can manually change the symbology through later properties but I don't think you can control what the app picks as a default. Transparency is something you need to manually set within layer properties. ArcMap won't automatically set transparency settings.
