the other side: parent, current arcsde version 10.1, soon will upgrade to 10.2.2.
Now our side using replica to synchronize the schema and data from the parent side.
Are they just upgrading to Desktop 10.2.2? or upgrading the parent sde gdb to 10.2.2 as well. If the parent sde gdb is upgraded to 10.2.2, and the child remains at 10.1...then Yes, you cannot continue using replication. In that case, database backups or XML workspace documents will be your options. Maybe someone else may have a better solution for you..

Patrick Foppe You are not running into an issue. This is an expected behaviour, mentioned in the following Help document: Preparing to upgrade a geodatabase in SQL Server: ArcGIS Help (10.2, 10.2.1, and 10.2.2)
You can upgrade directly from a 9.3.x, 10, 10.1, or 10.2 geodatabase to a 10.2.2 geodatabase if your database is at a supported release. There is no geodatabase upgrade from version 10.2.1 to 10.2.2; all changes made between those releases were implemented in the ArcGIS client applications.

That Bug is only at Desktop 10.2. It has been fixed at 10.3. Also you can use an older version of Desktop (10.0 SP5, 10.1 SP1) to synchronize the changes.

The best I can think of would be to create separate groups and add the Windows logins to the groups as desired. The groups will have permissions based on your need. Example: db_datareader: for previewing purpose only db_datareader: for users who are going to edit all the data in the geodatabase grant privileges from ArcCatalog: for users who are supposed to edit certain data only. The reason for suggesting groups-- you have Windows AD setup and won't have to add each login manually and setup permissions.
