Hi George, Thanks a lot for the contribution, The name of the installation wizard I am using is "Database_Server_Desktop_103_143531", according to your posts, I've figured that with this software installed I can create a workgroup geodatabase that enables only three users, and if I installed the server version of this installation wizard (which I do not know its name, and it would be highly appreciated if you mention its complete name) I can create a workgroup geodatabasse with 10 users. Is this correct? Yours,

Asrujit, I still struggling with the license, I've installed the database server, and it did not prompted me to provide a license. Please see below 1- Installing the database server 2- Installing SQL Server Express (the full installation of SQL Server is not included in the screenshots) 3- Entering the Server Parameters 4- The login was added Successfully 5- The installation completed and I did not provide any license!

Many thanks Quin for the prompt response, Is the ArcSDE for Microsoft SQL Server Express installation wizard available for ArcGIS 10.3 version? I am not able to find it within the ArcGIS desktop 10.3 installation package. Thank you also for the script!

Hi Asrujit, Thank you for the helpful contribution! Actually, I got confused. I came from the enterprise geodatabase environment, and new to the Workgroup GDB; when I create an enterprise geodatabase, or enable an enterprise database to be enterprise GEODATABASE, I am asked to provide an authorization file (in the screen shots below). However, in the case of Workgroup GDB, I can create it without providing any authorization (in the third screenshot). At what level should I authorize the workgroup geodatabase? May you please explain? May you please also elaborate how can I check the Server_config table in SQL Server Management Studio (My experience with SQL Server is shallow)? Best Regards, 1- Creating an enterprise Geodatabase; it Asks for an authorization file 2- Enabling enterprise Geodatabase; it also asks for the authorization file 3- Creating a Workgroup Geodatabase; it DOES NOT ask for any authorization file!

Hi Asrujit, Regarding the license I used no license for authorizing this Geodatabase, since it is a Workgroup GDB; I connected to the database server, and created it (in ArcMap), and it did not ask me for any license. Regarding the number of connections, I had only 3 connections with NO map services connected to this GDB. Best,

I am trying to connect to a Workgroup Geodatabase, when trying to exploring this geodatabase I get an error that says: “Failed to connect to database. Maximum Number of connections to instance is reached”. However, only three users are connecting to this geodatabase which is less than the TEN allowed users. What might be the issue here? Thank you and Best Regards,

1- With the enterprise GDB, users in a workgroup network (Not domain) can access the GDB. However, it seems that this is impossible in the workgroup GDB. 2- In the case of the enterprise GDB, I can access it (the enterprise GDB) from any machine connected to the same network of the machine hosting the enterprise GDB by adding a database connection> typing the instance name>entering the username/password (which is a database user and does not depend on a windows user)> then connecting to the database. Furthermore, if the instance can be accessed over internet (via a real IP address), anyone connected to the internet with ArcMap and SQL Server installed on his machine can access this enterprise GDB using a proper username/password. However, this is not applicable with the workgroup GDB. What do you think? Do you agree with me?

Dear Asrujit, Thank you very much for the helpful input, Considering the points you highlighted above, I can say that: In addition to the traditional limitations of the workgroup GDB (limited number of concurrent users, limited storage capacity, number of licensable cores, …etc) there are two more limitations that the workgroup GDB has when comparing it with the enterprise Geodatabase: 1- The users/editors must be connected to a domain network. 2- When using ArcMap to connect to the database, the users/editors can only access the geodatabase only from their own machines (because they use windows users, unlike the users created in the enterprise GDB that use database users which can be accessed from any machine) Do you agree with this? Best,

Thank you Asrujit for the helpful input, I tried this and it worked with different users in the same machine (for example: hani-pc\hani, hani-pc\ahmed, and hani-pc\sami). However when adding users from other machines within the same network (for example: Asrujit-pc\Asrujit), I got the following error: "windows nt user or group not found. check the name again" How can I resolve this problem? Once again, Thank you for the prompt answer!

I’ve installed ArcGIS Desktop, Microsoft SQL Server Express, and database server WITHOUT installing ArcGIS Server. Then, I connected to the database server in ArcMap, and created a new geodatabase (a .mdf workgroup geodatabase) and created a feature class in it, registered it as versioned, and created some versions. I tested the whole versioning workflow, and it worked perfectly; all the versions were working well, and the reconcile/post process also went well. Actually, I got confused about licensing this process, since according to ArcGIS Server functionality matrix, this process (multi user editing using versioned workgroup geodatabase) requires a basic-workgroup or standard-workgroup or advanced-workgroup license. My question is: if I just want to edit my data with my workgroup using a workgroup geodatabase WITHOUT publishing them via ArcGIS Server, should I purchase an ArcGIS Server license (for example the lightest one: Basic-Workgroup)? Or can I perform this with the desktop license only and the free SQL Server Express? Any help is highly appreciated! Kind Regards,

I am not able to find how can I add a user to a workgroup geodatabase, as I do in an enterprise geodatabase (right click the geodatabase connection>administration>add user) as shown in the first screen shot. However there is no “add user” option in the administration options for a workgroup GDB created with Microsoft SQL Server Express and added to the geodatabase server (shown in the second screenshot) Any help is highly appreciated 1- Adding a new user to an enterprise geodatabase 2- How can I add a new user to the workgroup geodatabase?
