Your workspace setting doesn't look right - it is set to your shapefile in the sample code you posted... Bear with me, but should I just truncate the file path? I want to place the resultant grid in the directory... Thx, oops...I just tried to truncate the file path and "EOL -String Literal error popped up" Maybe I should set up a GEODB and do it that way? It seems like I can have a safe workspace in the GEODB.

Hi all, I am trying to create a grid with this GridIndexFeatures tool. I keep getting a syntax error on the parameter for the "polygonWidth" and "polygonHeight". I'm doing this in IDLE: here is what I got so far: ###script for the intersection of the 2 shapefiles ### ###import the basic mods for the geoprocessor import arcpy, sys, os, traceback, math, string ###set up the workspace you're going to work in from arcpy import env arcpy.env.workspace = "C:\GIS_Data\PGE_MLPP\intergrid.shp" #set local variable outFeatureClass = "intersection" inFeatures = "NonAOC" polygonWidth = "528 feet" polygonHeight = "528 feet" ###Execute the Grid arcpy.GridIndexFeatures_cartography(outFeatureClass, inFeatures, "", "", "", polygonWidth, polygonHeight) ###Print print "Done" Here is the error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:/Users/RLong/Documents/intersect1", line 23, in <module> polygonWidth, polygonHeight) File "C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Desktop10.0\arcpy\arcpy\cartography.py", line 787, in GridIndexFeatures raise e ExecuteError: Failed to execute. Parameters are not valid. ERROR 000732: Input Features: Dataset NonAOC does not exist or is not supported ERROR 000398: Value must be positive ERROR 000398: Value must be positive ERROR 000892: The numeric value is outside of the valid range. ERROR 000892: The numeric value is outside of the valid range. Failed to execute (GridIndexFeatures). I've done this script (and variants of it) several times, but SINCE I'VE INSTALLED SP5 this is happening. just sayin... Any help is apprecieated.

I am having the same issue. Did you ever figure this out?? No, I never did. I did install SP5 for 10.0 last week and MAYBE I should try it again. REALLY frustrating. Are you on 10.1?

Hey all, I've been working on creating a point shapefile from the centroid of a polygon grid I created for mapbook purposes. I have a simple script that is coming back with this error:"Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:\Users\RLong\Documents\NewPoint.py", line 19, in <module> arcpy.FeaturetoPoint_management("GridIndex", "SamplesLoc", "Centroid") AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'FeaturetoPoint_management'" Here is my code so far: ###Simple point shape file object for testing
###
###Import standard modules
import os, sys, math, arcpy, traceback, string, fileinput
###Setup your workspace or file you're going to use
from arcpy import env
arcpy.env.workspace = "C:/Users/RLong/GIS_Data/Conversions/GridIndex.shp"
###Setup Local variables
in_features = "GridIndex.shp"
point_location = "Centroid"
out_feature_class = "SamplesLoc"
###Create the points
arcpy.FeaturetoPoint_management("GridIndex", "SamplesLoc", "Centroid") Could this error be coming up cuz I don't have arcinfo? Any help is appreciated, Randy

When you copy and paste an annotation in Focus Data Frame mode, this annotation should be visible below original one. But by default it's not placed in the same annotation group as original annotation but in <Default>. It can be changed in Drawing toolbar: Drawing menu -> Active Annotation Target. It should not cause your problem but introduces a mess in annotations. Marcin, you nailed it. I had about 8 anno groups in this .mxd and the anno was getting "placed" in another group. Many thanks for the help!

Hi all, I have an .mxd that I'm having problems with. I have a set scale in layout view (1in=400ft) and want to convert my labels to anno forbetter placement. When I convert to anno the problem is I'm trying to copy some labels and move them around BUT when I copy and double click on properties, the DATAFRAME PROPERTIES dialog pops up, NOT the text box. The text is gone and the outline of the box is there (showing the selection), but nothing is in there. Weird. I have a feeling it might have something to do with the REFERENCE scale, but I've changed it from 300ft to NONE to 100ft and still doesn't fix it. Any ideas? Thanks,

Chris, I'm trying to do something similar to what you're doing, BUT I just need to create a point shapefile from the centroid of a grid index I already created. I'm trying to "copy" some of your example code in the python window, but the syntax error keeps popping up. I guess, you did this in PYTHON IDLE environment. But, does the parcel layer need to be existing. I'm using my existing grid I created, but the syntax is messing me up. Thanks for any help

ha ha! good catch ken. I THINK what happened is when I was experimenting with adding different fields, the SILICA field was entered in a couple of times. Well, when I deleted the fields, I didn't "refresh" the label expression dialog box. So, I removed the shape file and added it back in, and VOILA! However, the function is not labeling the other well sites that have a zero. hmmm

I have some wells that have a detection of Silica and I have some that have a zero - either their was no silica or we didn't test it. I would like the labels to display if there is a value at the well. If there is a zero, I don't want it to display zero, I just want it to be blank. Here is a screen shot of where put the labels in by hand: I converted the labels to anno and just typed in the values I needed. [ATTACH=CONFIG]18660[/ATTACH] Thanks,

Wayne, thanks for the help. I only am dealing with 4 records, but I want' to nail this down, b/c I know that I got some data that could be dozens of records. I've changed the field "silica" several times:I've made it a short a double and with the code just like the example in the help. Still no go.

no go. I tried this:
Function FindLabel ( [LOCID] , [SILICA] )
if ( ["SILICA"] > 0 ) then
Findlabel = [LOCID]
end if
End Function
The quotes that are around SILICA should have done the trick...
