Andrea- Sorry, I've never used the product you mention. I don't think a full blown SQL Server database will restore to a SQL Express data base.

Hello all, My knowledge of ArcSDE and SQL server is limited so I apologize if this question seems silly. I need to get a copy of an ArcSDE SQL server (2000) geodatabase from someone but they don't have ArcGIS intalled to connect to it (I could do a connect in ArcCat if they did and then just export to an mdb). So can they export the database using (within) SQL server 2000? How do they do that? Once I have that copy how can I use it within ArcGIS? Can I just put it on my server and connect to it in ArcCat? They can export shapefiles but I need the network and relationship tables from the geodatabase. I don't think it's that easy but wondering if this is possible. I appreciate any help and knowledge! Thanks, Assuming you have some flavour of Sql Server, you can have that someone run a SQL backup, and then give you the backup. Then you can restore it to your instance of SQL Server; however, if you have a later version of SQL Server you'll need to run an update in SQL Server to get it into the right version for you. I've done this several times to get data to ESRI tech support, as well as upgrading from 9.3.1 SDE/SQL Server 2000 to 10.0/SDE/SQL Server 2008 Hope this helps-

My responses in bold.... Hi Joe, Do you mean that when you connect to the geodatabase in Desktop, you only see dbo.DEFAULT as the transactional version option? You restarted Desktop after re-creating your geodatabase, right? If you create a new spatial database connection, does it still show dbo.DEFAULT only? Hmmm; can't recall exactly; seems like I did though; that was yesterday. Another long day at a different client site today! And you did say you deleted the database from the SQL Server instance before you re-ran the Post Installation wizard. If you didn't completely get rid of the database and start from scratch, re-running the Post Installation wizard on the existing database wouldn't switch schemas. I seem to recall that when you delete a database in SQL Server, there's an option that asks if you want to restore from backup. Is it possible that was checked and, therefore, it restored a backup that already contained the ArcSDE geodatabase system tables? The databases are gone for sure; there is some perverse satisfaction in deleting those that cause pain. However, I just let the post install delete and recreate the 5151 instance. When you open the database in Management Studio, if the ArcSDE geodatabase system tables are shown to be in the dbo schema (i.e., they're named things like dbo.sde_layers), either try running the Post Installation wizard and provide a different name for the database, or drop the existing database, be sure it is gone from the SQL Server instance, and run the Post Installation wizard to re-create the database and geodatabase, specifying an sde-schema. I'll be back at this on Monday (today is Thursday). I'm not done with the project nor this thread by a long shot! -Kim Thanks Kim, et al. I'll post back up in a couple of days what the solution works out to be.

By default, if you selected SDE schema in the post installation, it would be sde.Default. Yep, that's what I thought, but it didn't work that way....

No, no! You *don't* want 'sde' in the Administrator or DBO groups, else SQL-Server will promote your 'sde' to DBO. - V Fair enough.... But back to the orginal post, how do I get sde.default as opposed to dbo.default when I run the post install? I haven't done a complete new install since 8.3; just upgrades to exisiting databases... Thanks-

V- nope. I figured post install would somehow auto-magically cover that for me. Guess I need to set up SDE user a-priori in sql as a dbo user? Thanks- jb

Here is my situation; brand new install of SDE/Server 10.0 on Windows 2008r2 64 bit os. Using SQL-Server 2008 on a different box than sde installation. During my post install, initially I chose DBO schema. After struggling with that, I deleted the database and then ran post install using the SDE schema choice. Now I can connect via ArcCatalog with the SDE user login, but it still shows dbo.default. What the ....? What happened to good old sde.default? I would rather use the sde.default/schema as I have in the past, but can't seem to convince the post install of my intentions.

Did an experiment. Instead of the real FSAs as Postal Code (ex: h3x) used a fake: 12345. Worked. OK....why? Ohhhh.... Canandian data.... All bets are off! No; just kidding... Thats a really good question!

Case 1: Streets are in file geodatabase and mapped addresses, type, street name, etc. Mapped L/R city Mapped L/R State Did not map L/R Zip Results: very slow Case 2: Streets are in file geodatabase and mapped addresses, type, street name, etc. Mapped L/R city Mapped L/R State Did not map L/R Zip Results: 0 candidates Am I missing something? This might be a similar situation to a problem I was having a few weeks ago. It seems that the 10.x locators are a little more particular than we've seen in the past; you may need to map your zip codes.

Hi Joe, Thanks for your response. I just learned that the geocoding engine of ArcGIS 10 is quite different from that of ArcGIS 9.3. Thus the "Geocoding" format of txt file for ArcGIS 9.3 does not work in the Address Locator of ArcGIS 10. I tried to use the ArcGIS 9.3 Address Geocoding txt file in creating an Address Locator from my ArcGIS 10 without any luck - see the attached files. Any comments on this matter? Please respond. Thanks, Scott Chang Let me get this straight: you are trying to create a locator from a text file ? I've never had occasion to do that.

Hi all, I just got a copy of the book "Introducing Geographic Information Systems with ArcGIS 9.3: A Workbook Approach to Learning GIS", 2nd Edition by Michael Kennedy. In the CD of the book, there is a text file "Address Geocoding - Step by Step" - see the attached jpg file. I don't know whether I can use my ArcGIS 10 program to use this ArcGIS 9.3 Address Geocoding txt file or not. Please kindly help and advise me how to do it, if it is possible to use my ArcGIS 10 program to use this ArcGIS 9.3 Address Geocoding txt file. Thanks, Scott Chang Scott- a text file is just a text file; you should be able to use it in 10.x.

Hi Joe, Thanks for the help. I'm using the USA Geocoding locator that came built into the Arc software. As far as our data goes, i'm a little stumped, I understand what you are saying, but no matter which way I feed the info into Arc, I get the same results. For example, if I open ArcMap and do a find on any address in St Louis, it returns a match on St Louis and Saint Louis. Alternatively, if I do a find on any address in Saint Louis, it returns a match on St Louis and Saint Louis. Because it is returning both results, I don't think editing the data will help me, I would assume there is some way within Arc to do this and I just don't know how :). So you get the same result, with the same score, but each one has the city spelled two different ways? That seems like rather odd behavior; call me captain obvious, right?! I don't know if I have that data set loaded on my machine, but I'll take a look...

Dennis; typically alternate names tables are for streets or points that you are matching to. For example if a street is named E Elm St but is AKA 1st St you could enter an address as either 1234 E Elm St or 1234 1st St and get a hit. Or with point data you could have a Dennys on Main aka Dennys. My guess is you are using a US streets with City type of locator, and the data you are matching to has both ST Lewis as well as SAINT LEWIS in the city field. The only way I know to fix that problem is to edit your data. Hope this helps-

I'm not aware of any tool, but I thought I'd toss my $00.02 your way. Something to consider is that using streets as the basis of geocoding is typically less precise than using address points derived from you parcels. And sometimes less precise is good, as long as they are accurate. By accurate, I mean you get on the block; by precise I mean you hit the door step everytime for your geocoded point. Some places use the actual house numbers on the street to establish the range which what it sounds like you are doing. My use of street centerline data for geocoding for 9-1-1 calls, and I'm not a fan of using house numbers for street ranges. Lot's of things happen at intersections in the 9-1-1 world which is why I prefer accuracy over precision when it comes to streets. Emphasis on streets; anytime you use a linear feature to geocode against, you are interpolating the location of the address. My example is always if the range on a street is 100-200, the street based locator is going to drop the point right in the middle of the block, on the even side of the street. Could be that house number 150 is really on the odd side of the street and at one end. If I need that specific precision, I'll use point data. As a suggestion, you may want to investigate the grid your city is based upon. Most named streets have a corresponding numeric value based on the grid. Use the grid/numeric values to range your street segments. Those aren't going to change. Structures may come and go, but addressing grids are static for the most part. Hope this helps.

Hi all, I have followed the Steps of attached 3 jpg files to do Correct source addresses using interactive rematch => Rematch interactively by correcting input addresses (on Page 244), and Rematch interactively by pointing on the map (on Page 245). I have a hard time to get the blue line (I guess it is a street which is the result of "Rematch interactively by pointing on the map") on the figure (on Page 245) appeared on my mxd MAP. Please kindly help and tell me how to get the line of "Street" by doing "Rematch interactively by pointing on the map" in detailed instructions. Thanks, Scott Chang I've never actually added an address point by interactively pointing to a location as described in the text, but it seems fairly straight forward. It appears to me that the street has been selected resulting in it's blue color; my guess is they did that for illustrative purposes only. You could pick any street you want and then following the instructions of step 4, you should be able to geocode the location. Hope this helps...
