If your users are going to create/own data they must have their own schema. That's an sde thing, not a sql thing...

Hi, I want to ask something about turned to me crazy. I have a sptial database (XYZ) on SQLServer 2008 R2. I can connect to it (XYZ) using arccatalog, but when I created different database (KLM) and tried to connect it (KLM) via ArcCatalog it connects to older (XYZ) database :S I didn't figure out why it doesnt't connect my new database (KLM). Does anyone know anything about that problem? Did you establish a new connection in arc catalog to the database KLM? Do you have permissions to at least read KLM?

Not sure if this will help you guys or not; while I've never had this particular error, schemas can be on the maddening side.

Margaret- when you mention addresses, how are these portrayed? As a point feature class? My guess is one of them is goofing on you and is one of those weird outliers you get from time to time; I can remember being provided points of Lat/Long projection that were water wells in Utah. One of them lined up in Greenland... If my hunch is correct, you should be able to add the points along with your network and then zoom to the extent of the points. That should show you where the outlier is. Hope this helps-

In the twenty something years as a GIS practioner, I've come across boat loads of individuals who are artificially intelligent with respect to GIS... Oh. Wait... That's not what you are asking....

Building a locator for the entire US took 9 hours? Sounds like a bargain to me. I can't imagine that much work taking less time. How about you test a smaller (much smaller, like a single state or better yet, a single county) and see what happens? If you are still getting those kinds of results, maybe then you should log a bug with tech support....

A few things worth considering: Use database authentication. I wouldn't have the SDE user own any data. My user owns the data. If you or any of your users will create data, schema and user name must be the same. I'm assuming you are using SQL Server as your backend; if so this thread might be of interest to you. For what it's worth, you are not alone singing the 'GIS Guy gets saddled with server admin duties' blues. My gray hair numbers have gone through the roof recently. Here are a couple of threads of mine: On Schemas On SDE schema. Best of luck; I'm sure a couple more folks will reply. I'm not going to mention any names, but [cough.. VINCE! you out there?] there's a lot of folks more knowledgeable than me that can shine some good light on the subject.

I'm a little late on this discussion, but I'd like to make a suggestion with respect to the original post regarding: I have a composite address locator based on four address locators, all stored in ArcSDE (v10). Don't store you locators in SDE. Create a separate folder and store them there. When I publish locators, I don't publish them to default root folder either. I have a virtual folder called (of all things) Locators. I don't know if this will resolve the issue you are having, but ever since I've stopped storing locators in any type of geo-database, I've led a much more prosperous and fulfilling life.... (see this thread.)

I've been reading and trying to understand, but I cant get it to work. I have a road network over a large area with different attributes like 1,2 and 3 describing how good the roads are. How can I restrict my analyses so it cant use roads with attribute 2 for example? Thanks in advance! Take a look here. It describes how to set up one-way restrictions; you can use this approach to negate travel based on your "good-road" field. Here is a description of evaluators. Take a look at the Evaluator examples section, Assigning values to restrictions. Finally, the PDF tutorial is here. It pretty much covers you from beginning to end... Hope you find this helpful-

T ...they have been told not to keep them active overnight. Everyone's happy with this arrangement, but you do get people just plainly forgetting. System admins lament. I have been the 'benevolent s-a' over the years but as I get older, I get grumpier; no more phone calls asking users to get off. I just stop and start the service. Funny thing is, then my phone starts ringing....

I just googled max character length sql and one listing says it'll store 1 billion characters; another says that text variables can store up to 2gb of text data. Yikes! To me this is a case of just because you can, it doesn't mean you should. It's hard for me to concieve a text field more than 50 characters wide; perhaps you could write some kind of script that adds a newline after X number of characters if you were to export the records to a text file.
