You should be able to configure portal to only provide search results in only the language(s) you desire. The option for that is in portaladmin, and started at 10.3.1. There's not yet a way to remove the default content that ships with Portal for ArcGIS, however there is an existing enhancement request for this functionality. 10.4 is a scheduled release. While installing it may help, the issue you're encountering isn't something that 10.4 is specifically designed to address. I've never personally encountered issues like those you describe. Questions: Was this an upgrade from a previous version of Portal for ArcGIS? Can you configure logs to run in debug or verbose mode and provide a snippet of any errors you see? Can you go into Portaladmin>index and successfully reindex the portal? If you can't reindex, that may speak to the issue and we should be able to provide other suggestions.

I'm curious to see if explicitly defining your global catalog using IPv4 helps anyone on this thread encountering this issue: http://server.arcgis.com/en/server/latest/administer/windows/configuring-the-domain-controller-used-by-arcgis-server.htm

Hi Mike, I'd like to suggest logging this issue to #esrisupportservices. We can help diagnose the issue. We'd like to dig down to understand if this is a DNS issue, a permissions issue of some sort, an IIS/Web Adaptor issue, etc. We can also help you register your enterprise database with ArcGIS for Server so that data isn't copied up into the config-store when you publish. The site creation and performance patch wouldn't have anything to do with this error. It addresses slow service stop/start times and occasional site creation errors. In general, it's always recommended to not mix versions. For your specific question, I would up the GIS Server logs to VERBOSE, reproduce the issue, and check to see what error you're receiving. Some info I'd like to know include what kind of data are you publishing, is the data copied to the sever or is it referenced? With regard to this question: "But then again, I don't understand why with my setup ArcGIS for Server would make any requests to ArcGIS.com in the first place" That's the bug that this patch addresses.

This type of issue sometimes occurs when the memory commit charge is maxed out. Sometimes it's a result of a misconfigured VMware balloon driver. Does increasing the virtual memory on the machine help?

What error did you receive? Channel.security.error? Did Esri Support Services request a capture from a tool called 'fiddler'? Are the services in your application referenced via a hostname, or a FQDN?

If you're publishing a hosted service from ArcGIS Desktop to ArcGIS.com, there are only two options: Feature Services and Tiled Services. See: About hosted web layers—ArcGIS Online Help | ArcGIS : types of hosted web layers.

I *absolutely* know it will work - I only suggested deploying apps on the same web server instance to save a little money on the certificates. You'd want a certificate for that application server so that you don't get mixed content messages in the browser, but as long as the solution uses SSL all the way through from end to end, you'll be golden.

Hi Filip, 1. Do I understand correctly that the certificate used for IIS has nothing to do with the certificate for ArcGIS Server? A. Correct Personally, here's what I'd do, especially if I'm hosting the web server (IIS) and ArcGIS Server on the same machine: a. Use new self signed certificate created via the Admin API with a CN that matches the machine's FQDN b. Configure IIS with a CA signed certificate c. Connect the web adaptor to the GIS Server (port 6443) d. Deploy the web apps on the same server. This way both the web adaptor and applications are both behind a single SSL certificate. At this point, you just provide users with the URL to the web adaptor. I prefer not to expose ArcGIS Server to users on ports 6080 or 6443, so even if I chose NOT to deploy a web adaptor I would still follow this same workflow, but configuring IIS as a reverse proxy to expose the GIS Server to the public.

You are correct that the G2 certificate from GoDaddy is not trusted by the Java Keystore because the certificate chain is incomplete. Does applying the G1 to G2 crossover certificate from this resource complete the certificate chain so that it's trusted? Note that the crossover cert should be added to your web server. https://certs.godaddy.com/repository

Thanks, I appreciate it. I hope yours is also good. Can you post a screen capture of the error? I'm assuming you're using the portal initial admin account, and not a domain account to configure the web adaptor. Is this the case? Is the web adaptor installed on the same machine as Portal? It really shouldn't matter, but it would be good to know.

If you're not using your own locator service, you'll need to configure portal to use the Esri world geocoder. To do that, you'd need to add http://geocode.arcgis.com/arcgis/rest/services/world/geocodeserver as an item in portal and save it with your ArcGIS.com credentials saved (because Geocoding costs credits). You'd then use the portal item as the geocoder in your organization settings. ArcGIS Help (10.2, 10.2.1, and 10.2.2)
