Hi Dan, Thanks. I did what you explained to. When I imported in anew data frame the dwg as first thing I had the message that the dwg has Unknown spatial reference. I ignored it. The number on the bottom right is a large number followed by "Unknown Units" This has raised another issue I always struggle with: I added the Known shapefile which has Proj coordinate system WGS84 UTM 30 N. No messages appeared but on the bottom right is still large number followed by "Unknown Units". In fact if I check the data frame properties it says under "Current coordinate system" : No Coordinate system. Why the data frame didn't pick all the information from the known shapefile? Do you haver a suggestion for this too? A part from that it looks like I have to define the projection for my dwg files .Am I correct? Thanks F

Hi Dan, thanks a lot for your reply. As I have also the PDFs of these aligment charts I had a look to the chart details. in the legend there are "Survey details": WGS84 Grid North displayed in chart and Projection :UTM Zone 30N. My question is: Do the dwg files related to this pdfs have Spatial reference already? If not, why when I try to import into my xmd which is set up with WGS84 UTM 30N not all of them are displayed in the right place? Why even if I convert the dwg into shp and give the projection some of them are not displaying in the right place? If the dwg files come all from the same survey why the do not behave in the same way? Thanks for help. F.

Hi, I got houndreds of dwg files and DTM from a Geophysical survey for a submarine cable route (They are from alignment sheet). When I try to import them into ArcGIS (Desktop 10.2) it shows the message about the "Unknown Spatial Reference". I have an .mxd with the Coordinates and projection already set up for that project. Does anyone know why if I ignore this message sometimes it is drawing the dwg in the right place and sometimes not? If I try to convert them in shp in the first place and I try to give them the same coordinate system and projection from the data frame, it doesn't really work for all of them. Some of them are projected in the right place and some not. Please can someone advise on the best practice to import this data into my GIS? Thank you very much in advance. F.

Hi all, I am writing to ask some help/clarifications about data frame, coordinates and projections. I do not use GIS very often and I have a big gap in cartography. I use ArcMap 10.2 Desktop someone sent me a layers package. I imported the layers into a new empty document. The data frame now gets the layer's proj. coordinate system and projection. -1) some layer in the layers pack have BRITISH NATIONAL Grid coord system and Projection:Transv.Mercator and other layers have GCS WGS84 Datum D_WGS84. Shall I have to change anything? Are they correct or because they have different coord system I will have problem (i.e doing some measurement or analysis?) - 2) If I add some raster Admirality multichart a message for transformation comes up. It asks me if I want to transform the coordinate system as some of the charts are in ETRS_1989 Mercator and some are ETRS 1989 Transv Mercator. Shall I have to transform? If so, does it results in any measurement distortion or conflict with the layer package? -3) I had to create a new feature class so I used the BRITISH NATIONAL GRID Transv.Mercato because of the Data Frame.Am I correct? Does it result in any measurement or spatial analysis problem? -4) I tried to edit my new feature class and a kind of info box comes up with "Spatial reference does not match data frame" related to the layers which were in GCS WGS 84 instead of British National Grid. Is this a problem? Thank you very much in advance to who will have time to clarify. Have a nice day Francesca

Hi, sorry again for the very basic answer. Unluckily I do not use everyday the GIS so sometimes I struggle even with something I have already done. Is anyone aware of how to convert easting and northing values (I have thousands of values!) into Lat and Long as I need DD for the GIS and my coordinates are in metres. Many thanks for all your suggestions. Francesca

Thank you Chris for your reply, but if I understand well this Cartography specific tool is available with the advanced licence which I do not have. Thank you anyway. Cheers, Francesca

I have two cable route which are parallel but sometimes they are not as they have been modify to skip obstacles on the seabed. I need to create a center line between these two polylines. I do not have arcinfo. Thanks a lot

Hi all, I have few questions if anyone can help: - what the BLOBs are?I do not really understand what they are and how I can use them. when I try to add the field from the geodatabase it seems adding the field for BLOB but then the field is not visible from the TOC in arcmap. Anyone knows why? - I should do a big map with all the shp we have in my company and I have to link to each particular area all the documents we have related to that (.doc: .pdf; excel and jpg). I managed to link the pics adding as raster field in the TOC but apparently I can put just one pic per time. Is it possible to have more pics for each point? I also managed to link all the document with the Hyperlink, but I would like to know if it is possible to link them in a different way like pop up (but not in arcgis online). Many thanks for all your help. Francesca
