Huh, actually changing intersections to crossing tends to make the rule functions a lot better at intersections just so you know... I am working with the rule too ATM. Just make sure you don't change other intersection types. It makes more complex intersections more manageable.

Totally missed these replies. Yes haha you got it. I am still experimenting with dealing with some of these issues (geometry functions I change out in the spare time). You honestly know the street rule pretty well at this point. 😃

Hi Steve! I thought it could help with the intersection, I am not sure how it will work for for the land access points. Even that was a guess. It does look good. I am going to take a look at this more later. To be honest, the bicycle conflict spacing almost got removed because I was worried about bugs (and it was not a perfect solution how I made it). Yes, I was hoping it would help us find the problem streets. Yes, I know exactly why it is shifted. Notice how the red extend into the intersection...it is because the rule thinks the street is wider than it actually is. You can either adjust corner radii, adjust Crosswalk_Begin/End, change crossing type, or create a buffer and turn that buffer to asphalt to fill it in and shift the road (last one not suggested). This is a perfect example of the UVspace, Unitspace conflicts I have run into creating this rule...it is a headache and I am sorry you have to share it. Sometimes it is an issue sometimes it is not. =/ David

Here Steve, This is Flag Empty Space in Display options. If you hover over it, its description will tell you it will turn the grey portions red when it is greater than laneWidth/3. Conflict spacing is here. When they are both on it looks like the example below. Notice that the large grey curb gap is flagged red and that the dashed conflict spacing is created. For two way bike lanes...I did not test it much, but it might look somewhat meaningful in the project at that intersection. I know the rule is complex, and we will be making a video soon to illustrate most* of its features. Kind Regards, David

Yeah. You have to create two segments at the ends. So essentially your entire portion of the street is actually made of 3 segments. I realized I need a diagram version of it so I attached it below. Again...this is just a way to do this, but the rule was not designed to do this.

Steve, this is simply amazing work. I am glad the rule can be used in this way, and I appreciate you sharing. I like how you handled the intersection bike lane, I experimented with making bike lane only segments before with similar results. If I may ask, did you try the conflict spacing option for the intersection portion? If that is a separate segment, the spacing option might...might cover the entire intersection...I never tried it with a double bike lane though. Also...I noticed that some of the "empty curb space" was a little large in some parts. If you turn on "flag empty space" it will flag the ones that might be errant roads. If you want to adjust them use the Crosswalk_Begin/End to get it outside the geometry. Still this is great work. I will use this webscene as a good case study to look at. Thanks Steve. David

Hi Michael, Thanks for the input. Yeah divert the rule carefully though, if you choose the wrong flow/rule it could look weird if you ever turn on trees or other features. Make sure it is the most basic rule you divert. Another option is to adjust the sidewalk widths/street widths for those street segments. That is how I made the example image above you mentioned. I just wanted a simple Gateway treatment to show it can be done. This configuration has widths change in two portions so it might be more complicated. Good luck with your project! Kind Regards, David

Hi Michael, That is actually the exact plan I had, and believe me when I say I know they are important and that I did try to include it in the release. I recently found a way to make one on the fly by changing the street width and sidewalk widths on connecting street segments (today in fact). This is not an intentional design, but it does work. The issue I have currently with using parking for curb extensions (natural place to do it), is how to integrate such an option with the existing UI, integrate with the bicycle lane options, manage to make angled splits/lengths, and make spaces that can adapt to the overall length of the street. It actually not that easy of a problem to solve. I could fill in those spaces with concrete, but I want a more potent solution than just that use case. Ultimately, I decided to start with this rule, and come back to curb extensions at a later date when I had more time. It is my full intention to include them. I even have draft curb extension code where I put it in a sidewalk. You could divert the Side/Curb Rules to that location and it would work (partially why I included it as an attribute was to preserve that option). However, it will look some what flat and rectangular. I do have a few questions for you. When did you download your rule version? After January 6th? If curb extensions were to be added would you like the options for them near the crosswalk options or near the parking options? I have been pondering this and I am still not sure. Kind Regards, David

Also Kathryn thanks for the curb extension idea...I never thought about using the rule like this...but this really looks like a curb extension. Thanks for experimenting! Steve Rhyne I thought you would appreciate this. The joint issue is still there, but over all a pretty likely scenario. David

Hi Kathryn, Another surprise! I never thought about doing curb extensions that way! That is very very interesting...You and Steve are going places with this rule. Unfortunately, I need to catch up. I never designed the rule to do very short segments. The best thing I can suggest it to utilize a few tricks. 1. Turn the CrosswalkEnd and CrosswalkBegin gap attributes to a negative number. 2. Make sure Crosswalks are turned off at non-intersections. 3. Manipulate nodes of the street so that each one is individually longer. Something to keep in mind is that each time you apply the rule to a new street segment, the rule will treat that segment as a separate street. The BEST way to deal with this issue is to do what the picture below illustrates and delete the one node that looks unnecessary and make a longer street. Then use the edit street tool to get the curve/bend you want. In general, the street rule will perform best when it is a street to intersection/junction connection. Generally I suggest street segments of lengths at least greater than 30 m. Also keep in mind that if the center space of the street starts to get trimmed by the crosswalk, you will need more CrosswalkEnd/Begin spacing. Geometry clipping by the crosswalk will interfere with how CE calculates edges, thus throws off ALL object insertion. Keep this in mind when trying to deal with short segments. I will look at this issue in more detail in the future. Kind regards, David

Hi Kathryn, I made the complete streets rule that Julia linked to you. If you want to provide feed back on the rule please feel free to post in the Discussion Thread here. I am open to questions you may have or can help you deal with problems you may encounter. I would like to believe the street rule I made can meet some of your needs or give you someplace to start. Kind Regards, David Wasserman PS: I not only do custom sidewalks, but crosswalks too. 😃

Hi Steve, We can talk about this more over email. I have a list of resources, suggestions. I am a street geometry specialist at this point, so there are some lessons related to streets that I can definitely pass on as well. David

Haha! Yes I forgot about that! I actually did that just for a project too...I am sorry Steve, I should have remembered that. That will work...I am so glad that attribute can do that. The answer is no. I focused largely on the street shape, and because Joints use UVspace, how to address them with the current street rule is something I am still thinking about. In fact, if you look at most of the code for other start shapes most of them have just reporting (I want the area to be reported for statistical book keeping), and sending them to Asphalt. The Street Shape and the Sidewalk shape got most of the love and attention in this rule (exceptions are Freeways, roundabouts-roundabouts can make gardens are the sidewalk settings are right). I am sorry if you are having joint troubles. =/ Um...Also...Median_TreeSplit is not a start rule...it should not show up like that...so...huh. Steve, thanks for putting receptive eyes to the rule...it is so large it is good to get feedback. David
