Hi Lesli! Yeah, I find that vignettes (those little faded edges around the perimeter of a map) is a soft way to visually frame visual content. I like neatlines sometimes (though rarely) but only if part of my map spills OVER the neatline.

But usually, I start with a simple hue gradient with a slight brightness shift too. To help re-inforce the less-to-more visual. Then I just play with them manually in the Color Scheme Editor in Pro until something looks cool.

Regarding the color palette question, you should check out the Viridis set of colors. Great for maps and visualization. https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/viridis/vignettes/intro-to-viridis.html

I think you get both with the same license. I've found the best way forward is to import an Arc Desktop project you are familiar with into Pro, so the on-ramp is a little smoother.

I think that's the best way forward sometimes. It was for me. I was working at a software company that had maps and stuff but I hadn't made a map in like 8 years. So I just started doing it and it all sort of took on a life of its own. Have fun!
