Hi Kevin, It easy: Need to make a change in your config.xml file. <Tool caption="YOUR TOOL TITLE" category="category" class="class" id="id.class" image="" message="Message" tip="Tip">
<Help heading="Heading" />
</Tool>
When you use the add in wizard there is a section for caption at the top for you TOOL. This is where you Put a title for your tool. BUT! If you also set an image for your tool, ArcGIS will read the xml and put the image there instead of your Caption (Title) So to fix, do not have an image, just the caption filled.

fc = str(sys.argv[1])
templine = fc + "_line_temp"
workspace = os.path.dirname(fc)
This was the part I was trying to get at. The object being used as the env for edits. If you try to find attributes for the obj that you have set as the edit env, you wont. The method above is setting the edit on a simple string path referencing the GDB. All of the work arounds have been successful using the edit with a string. This method works great.

Still a litle confused about the env object. env = EnvVar() I assume you are setting this within a function you created. Need to look at that.

I might even suggest not setting the edit session inside of the search. Set variable outside for search, and then call the session and then establish your search loop/update. Again, another thought.

First thought, not a solution yet, but you do need to nest your actual edits inside the edit sessions. I think its ok to have a search outside, but if there are updates, they need to go inside the operation. Riyas Deen suggests this already. Just wanted to stress that at minimum it should be considered. I am looking into edits with topology feature datasets.

Could you post the part of your code where you set the environement/workspace? I would like to look at that part. Just to get more clarity on the situation. The error is telling me that there is an issue there. An issue that says the object you have set does not work in an edit session.

Hi Adina, I am going to help you work through this. I am just saw this cross my screen and want to take a look at this later. So currently this does not help you, but I will come back and assist. Promise! I have done similar work with python add ins in the past. I can share my technique with combobox and data driven pages.

I wrote a python script that copies image raster files selected through a defined polygon to another folder.
It works quite well with few tiles, but with a larger amount I get the following message?
"UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode character u'\xfc' in position 4: ordinal not in range(128)"
What does this mean?
This is the error. But, does it provide you with the line number for where the crash occurs? Traceback. We can see the character that is not capable of passing through. There may be more than this.

Hey Hayley, I am currently writing a tool you could run. It expands on Christopher's input for using Dictionaries. Brilliant input. You may have already worked this out, but I will complete it anyway.

Of course it is just a guess without having the raster images. I wonder if these rasters were made with some other software not ArcGIS. I would guess that if they were created using ArcGIS that it might not throw this issue. Something is encoded with a different codec.

Hi Håvard, Would like to investigate your task a little further. Could you post what the arcpy call to the Merge_managment as you have it? I can't recall this exact behavior, but know that it is tedious working with the Merge. It is quite possible an issue with the field mapping. I also found that this was better designed to use a model, but it can be work in a script. Just needs more 'TLC' given the Field Mapping part. When you run it in Arc Map; just make sure there are no Queries. Just always a second thought sometimes; or even Selections on the data.
