When we switched from ArcDesktop 9.3 to 10 we had problems. It seemed to be caused by switching to .axf. Our magic number was around 60 fields. I figure it's not the amount of fields, but the total size of the record.

I recommend that ArcPad users manually copy and paste the folder containing the axf file to and from the mobile device. I tend to stray away from using a "sync" folder to automatically push data to and from a folder on the mobile device. Much better just to do it manually I 100% agree with this statement. I hate that you have to do this, but sync and ArcMap do not get along at all. You almost can't sync without having a problem of some kind.

I've had the same problem. I didn't really put too much into figuring out why, i just scrapped the checkbox for now. Tried setting default value to "False", but still reported "True". I'm running Nomad 800 with ArcPad 10.1 Windows Mobile6.1. I'll go back and check it out and see if I can get it to work.

ahhh... I knew that they did that for me once, but I couldn't figure out why/how. To clarify, they make forms instead of the TableView type forms. If you leave the tables out of the TOC, they will still show up in ArcPad, just as a TableView, not a nice looking form.

If the personal gdb acts like the file gdb.... You don't have to have the tables listed in the TOC. This has nothing to do with whether the tables are checked out or not. Do you have relationships built between the tables and the shapefile? If you do, than it should work. Are you using the checkout to .axf option?

We use an XRT receiver with the Nomad and can achieve 4 inch accuracy with real time corrections in the field using a hot spot for a Internet connection. But, you are using a ProXRt that uses H-Star and carrier not just code. You just happen to be using a Nomad as the interface. I do agree, though, on increasing the number of positions that you take.

I'm also assuming that the GPS chip is similar in Juno and Nomad. I believe they have the same chip, but Trimble specs the Juno and the new Nomad 900's at 1-3m where the older Nomads are at 2-5m. Both of those are assuming that you postprocess. They blame the Nomad's powerful processor chip for the interference. Also, it is true that the elevation mask is lower, but you can throw out those calculations in Pathfinder and apply a mask on the back-end before postprocessing. Moral of the story: Nomad is a Mapping grade receiver. It makes pretty pictures on a map, and that is all I expect from it.

Since there seems to be no way to specify what records to upload from AXF files - is there any way I can still use a shapefile version and upload with ArcCatalog dataloader. You can export an .axf as a shapefile in ArcPad studio if that would help. As for the intended check-in, check-out process, it is definitely a hassle. If executed perfectly, it works, but there are so many ways that it can go wrong. If using a sync partnership: When you sync your device, if ArcMap is open you may have problems. If you don't unplug the device after it syncs, you may have problems. If you forget to plug the device back in after check-in because you had to unplug it because if you didn't you would have problems... you will have problems. If you leave ArcMap open when you remember to plug back in your device to re-sync it, you might have problems. The sync is just a huge hassle and data-loss just waiting to happen. I would suggest manually copying and pasting the old/new .axf files every time. Otherwise, you end up overwriting new data with old data. If ArcMap could interact with the data straight from the device (like TerraSync and Pathfinder do) without having to rely on Microsoft Sync, the world would be a lot less complicated.

Why does this require 4 different feature classes? Could they not be definition queries of 1? What are you actually trying to collect and how do they relate in the real world? Oh, wait. Hold on. I think I get it. You have a "media" table for pics and such. You could have multiple pics at 1 location therefore you need a 1:M to the media table on all of the feature classes so you have 4 fk in the "media table" instead of having Join tables because ArcPad doesn't support them... hmm. . .

what??s the likely cause(s) for the bad accuracy? A:You're using a Nomad. What Nomad are you using? 800 or 900 series? The 800 series is only accurate 2-5m, 900 1-3m. You said very limited number under 5m. What was the actual breakdown? What do you consider worse than 5m? That is a pretty broad range. I wouldn't waste your money on an antenna. It may help with reducing multipath and it would get the signal above your head, but you are still using a Nomad. Everything degrades your positional accuracy. Were you around trees, buildings, any source of radio-interference? Did you wait until the points were collected before you started filling out any attributes? Were you looking down at the screen watching it collect the points, or did you have the device above your head or at least head level? Were you standing perfectly still while collecting? How long did you have the device on before you started collecting? If you have a 900 with Windows 6.1 than it gets a "Hotfix" at first. Then, after a few minutes it gets a real fix. The "hotfix" is handy and quick, but not as accurate as a real fix. Did you have a fresh almanac? 5 isn't that great of PDOP. Try for something a little closer to 2.

We are collecting 3D points in ArcPad. When I set the 3D points up, I was worried about 500 other things and didn't set up a Vertical Datum. What is the default vertical datum that ArcPad uses or does the default vary on the map units or the XY coordinate system? Any other information about Z datums would also be appreciated. Basically, I want the same datum that you would find on a topo map. FYI: ArcPad 10 SP1

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought that in ArcPad 8 and later versions, 1:M relationships from a featureclass to a table are supported but not table to table relationships. I know for a fact that if Feature Class "F" is related to Table "Ta" and "Ta is related to Table "Tb", you cannot set that up in ArcCatalog. When you try to relate Tb to Ta it complains that it already is involved in a relationship. You can actually do it as long as you make the relationships "simple" instead of "composite" but NEVER under any circumstances should you ever use "simple" relationships when using ArcPad if you are using the Data Manager to check-in/out data. I never tried just a table to table that wasn't already related to a feature class though.

I don't know what your exact problem is, but don't cuss the AXF yet. Use the power of SQL that it wields! I would change your function to something like:
Function ReturnNextID(tbl, strFieldName) 'tbl = tblName/layerName
Dim intMax
Dim ds
Dim query
Dim qRows
Set ds = Map.Layers("CityTrees").DataSource 'Assuming layerName = CityTrees
query = "SELECT max(" & strFieldName & ") FROM " & tbl
Set qRows = ds.execute(query) 'Execute Query
qrows.movefirst 'Read results
intMax = qRows.fields(1).value
ReturnNextID = intMax + 1
End Function
