Glad to help! Thanks for sharing the system info. I've sent you a message directly, and I'll send another in response to your post. If you are syncing at a 300 ppi with a lot of data (or with a larger map), the ppi is likely the culprit. Especially since you were able to eventually sync. With vector data, increasing the ppi will increase the amount of vertices - which are treated as "anchor points" in Adobe Illustrator. Adobe Illustrator reads each individual anchor point as it renders vector artwork (map features, in this case). So even for a straight line, where you'd only need two anchor points, increasing the ppi will likely increase the amount of anchor point amount to a much higher than needed value. This can also bloat the size of your AI file. You may want to try with 96 ppi and incrementaly increase if you find that you need more. (Side note: I always use 96 ppi with my syncs). Another tip - If your map is large, sync fewer layers at a time. Some data on ArcGIS Online is super dense and heavy, and syncing those layers by themselves will help sync time. Keep me posted on how this goes, @MarcoOrlandi !

@ShihoY until the fix is released (very soon), the workaround for you would be to use the shape of the legend rectangle as a clipping mask for the pattern. make a copy of the legend rectangle path. Place the leggend pattern paths in a group use the copy of the rectangle path as a clipping mask See this link for details under "Hide Parts of Objects..."

Hi @ChrisMyers_NewQuest . Thanks for sharing the details for this issue. As we discovered, the Illustrator file that you were trying to sync layers into was about 2 years old, which may be the cause for this problem. But you were able to create a new Illustrator file with the same data, and then sync new layers to the newly created AI file. We also discovered that your map was pretty large in physical size, so the sync took a few extra moments. We discussed some steps to alleviate recurrance of this issue: 1) Maintain a webmap that contains the layers your organization uses for this commonly reproduced map. This will allow you to quickly recreate an AI file with the several layers in case an AI file becomes "unsyncable." Especially with the passage of time as files age. Also, this will allow you to quickly create maps at other locations, extents, and scales with this same data. 2) PPI < 100 for maps containing only vector will often make syncs - and any subsequent syncs to an AI file faster. Not the root of this issue, but noted as one of the reasons for longer syncs. Syncing at 300 for vector-only files can add unnecessary size to the files, especially for one as large as yours. 3) the team will look into longevity of AI files. However, it would be good to follow step one as files do get corrupted over time, and Illustrator and Esri constantly push updates. Files will become less compatible over the years.

Hi Chris, Have you tried turning off or removing some of the layers? Or try adding the layers one-by-one? It looks like you're running into a known limitation with the content amount.

Yes, you can export specific layers from Pro as an AIX file. To do this: In ArcGIS Pro, turn off the visibility of the layers you do not want, and then export the map. If you want to eventually combine your AI layers into a single AI file, then you can paste them into a common AI file. Illustrator has a few different pasting options that help keep layers aligned, and pasted in their own discrete layer(S) if needed. Also, there are a few different Illustrator pasting shortcuts that allow you to paste in front or back, etc. I hope this helps!

Hi @JohnGoldsmith . That is quite a large map. Because of the processing that takes place to make the map ready for you to design, plus the size of the map itself, the opening time is going to take a while. Good news! The AIX processing time is something in our road map. The second thing you noted, where turning on/off layers takes a while, is an Adobe Illustrator RAM issue, and something beyond our control. I recommend checking out Adobe's documentation for increasing Illustrator RAM. There are a few things I know of that you can do to alleviate the issue. One is to turn some of your layers into outline mode. This saves RAM by not rendering appearences - just the basic outlines of the artwork. You can also turn off the visibility of layers you don't need to see to save RAM. The other thing is to increase the RAM that Illustrator uses. Basically, to rendering paths and anchor points in a WYSIWYG preview, Illustrator uses RAM. This increases when you pan/zoom or turn on more layers. It is typically not an issue until you have a high number of paths and anchor points, which you would on such a large detailed map

A new update of ArcGIS Maps for Adobe Creative Cloud, version 3.3 (October 2022) is now available. This update includes highly in-demand capabilities to support map design workflows with both ArcGIS and Adobe's graphic design apps, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Below are the key highlights of the new version: Plus update If you have a Plus account, you can now use a select set of vector tile basemaps to create your maps when you choose the newly available Default mapping profile. These vector tile basemaps provide many vector basemap options. When you sync the map using the Default mapping profile, the artwork is cropped more closely to the edges of the Illustrator artboard for better results. New Trial experience The Complimentary account sign up option has been replaced in the extension with a free 21-day trial subscription, so you can try the full capabilities instead of limited features. ArcGIS Organizational account data access improvements If you have an ArcGIS organizational account, you can now see all the maps and layers that you have access to in your organization when adding content from the My Organization category. (This category no longer filters content based on group items tagged with M4CC. If you used this legacy method to create subfolders, the M4CC tagging is no longer honored, but you can still find these items in the Groups category by group name.) Adobe Creative Cloud 2023 release support Support has been added for Adobe Illustrator 2023 and Adobe Photoshop 2023. Download ArcGIS Maps for Adobe Creative Cloud 3.3 here. Fixes BUG-000152588 Compilation map extent does not match Mapboard extent when user manually types in mapboard dimensions BUG-000149999 Map Notes layer from web map not added in Maps for Adobe Illustrator crashes on sync when auto-activate Adobe font is off

Hi @JustinBurker . Thanks for posting this. I will have the team investigate. While I'm doing that, can you try to move forward with the tutorial anyway. The message you're getting might not impact the final map. I hope that's it!

Hi @ChrisMyers_NewQuest. Thanks for sharing this with us. We are currently investigating a fix. In the interim, could you please try this workaround: Create the mapboard in the mapboards panel. In the compilation panel, set the desired PPI value prior to adding any new data. Add the desired data after setting the PPI. I tested this workaround, and it worked for me. I want to make sure it works for you too as the team investigates. Thanks! - Sarah

Hi @PavelSeemann Here's a handy trick I use with split paths. This Illustrator limitation can sometimes be alleviated by using the Pathfinder -> Unite tool. It is a tool I use frequently to merge these broken filled paths. I think this solution will be quicker than editing your data in GIS. For smaller maps, using a more generalized version of the data produces a single Illustrator path (e.g. using a 1: 500 mil dataset instead of 1:1 mil on a 1:500,000,000 map, etc.). One thing to make sure to do prior to Unite, is to delete any duplicated paths paths in the Illustrator layer. Sometimes, because paths are split, there will be a couple of duplicated paths. These duplicate paths are typically unclosed, so these Illustrator steps should get you quickly to a desired layer without any GIS work: 1. When you open in Illustrator, and see a "polygon" like this image below, lock all layers except the one with only the artwork for this split feature. 2. Find all open (unclosed) paths and duplicate paths. A hacky way I do this is to make the color for this feature very dark, and then give it opacity. This reveals overlapping artwork (spots that are darker than others, see image below). 3. Delete all duplicate and open paths. 3. With all the artwork for that feature selected, perform the Unite tool in Illustrator. For annotations, the Pro-toAIX export best practices currently recommends to label the layer in Pro without using annotation for the AIX exports. The Maps for Adobe team is investigating further updates. Thanks for the note! It would be good to communicate further re: what you see with annotations.
