Stuart

Mark, Correct, the GeoHMS 6.0 for ArcGIS 10.0 (package v 10.0.0.70) currently posted on the HEC site remains on the ArcHydro Tools v2.0 branch, at build 2.0.1.125 But HEC is a little slow to post up development (i.e. "bug fixed") releases for HEC GeoHMS and GeoRAS, while the versions on the ESRI maintained ftp site are the current builds with patches and bug fixes applied. At present, the ftp site is delivering GeoHMS builds v10.0.0.75, 10.0.0.76, 10.0.0.77, and the latest GeoHMS build v10.0.0.85 that bundles ArcHydro Tools v 2.1.0.30--as compared to the current v2.1.0.40 stand alone build of ArcHydro Tools. Development of the ArcHydro Tools 2.0 branch were finalized at build 2.0.1.133 Depending on your HEC-GeoHMS and ArcHydro support arrangements--you probably would prefer to be on the bug patched releases. The ReadmeMMDDYYY.doc file on the ftp site provides short notes on what is fixed with each build. So generally, the best practice would be to download the current builds from the ESRI Water Resources Group managed ftp site. Note: The GeoHMS installer sets version dependencies for ArcHydro, and so includes its install package (ArcHydroTools.msi), with the GeoHMS installer package. It will update an earlier version of ArcHydroTools, but will abort the installation if a later version of ArcHydroTools is already installed. So, if someone is going to work with GeoHMS they should probably use the latest version from the ESRI ftp site, not the HEC posted build--and eschewing use of the stand alone ArcHydro Tools installer. Fernando, No the version 1.4 releases will not run on ArcGIS Desktop 10.0. You need a version 2.x release. You'll probably want to use an FTP client like FileZilla to connect, but this ArcHydro Froum thread should put you on track. If you read the thread you'll see support for ArcGIS 10.0 has moved well beyond "Alpha" version. The ESRI run FTP site holds the ongoing development builds including version 2.x that will run under ArcGIS 10.0. The latest version is ArcHydro v2.1.0.40, just posted up March 5th. Ok to consider these production ready releases--but ArcHydro users are expected to support themselves notably on the ArcHydro and Hydro forums. I'd recommend using the latest ArcHydro build, unless you will be using the HEC GeoHMS release 6.0 (also available from the ESRI ftp site--not the version from the USACE HEC site) which has ArcHydro version dependencies and so bundles an ArcHydro version 2.1 installation several builds behind. Eamon, That is the way it is supposed to function when you "Deauthorize". If it does not rearm, you'll receive a licensing error -- 7288. At which point either obtain a new authorization number from your instructor, or open a support request with ESRI Customer Service to have the authorization number rearmed. You'll need to provide them with your ESRI Global ID, the Authorization number and if possible the Customer ID of your school. Stuart

Eamon, At this point for you, I'd suggest an attempt at a reinstallation on your system that has been completely cleaned of ArcGIS 9.x and 10.0 Vista is a little more finicky than Windows 7, but ArcGIS can be loaded and run with out too much fuss. Your system specifications look sufficient, but it is always worth while to update OS and drivers--especially for the nVidia Graphics card. It is critical that you run the installation from a user account with Administrators group membership and that if possible you disable UAC for the account. --Authorization code-- Yours is an Education edition 365-day evaluation--you did receive your EVAxxxxxxxx authorization number, and you did activate it, correct? If you are unsure, follow steps these links:
http://www.esri.com/apps/products/arcgis/eval10/evalhelp/index.cfm#install http://www.esri.com/software/landing_pages/arcgis/desktop-ed.html
If you were able to make it through the installation and at the end were presented with the Authorization Now... wizard, if your system completed the authorization exchanges you must run the ArcGIS Administrator tool from the start menu and in the "Desktop" panel select the Deauthorize button. Allow that to complete exchanges with ESRI. That will release your authorization code so you can reuse it after a clean installation. --Uninstall-- Any 3rd Party extensions would need to be uninstalled first. And then the old ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.x should have been removed completely prior to starting the ArcGIS 10.0 installation. Now everything should come off. Running the ArcGIS 10.0 cleanup utility removes the prior versions. But some components get left behind that can interfere. That includes the C:\Program Data\ESRI and the C:\Users\<accountName>\AppData\Roaming\ESRI, if any thing is left there it probably should be deleted or at least renamed. In the Windows registry--run regedit.exe from an elevated command prompt--delete the HKLM\Software\ESRI and HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\ESRI keys. And also delete the HKCU\Software\ESRI keys for each user logon present on the system. A couple of rounds of string searchs of the registry for "ARCGIS" and for "ESRI" should reveal any residual components to be deleted. It is possible to complete a removal manually, but it is tedious and too easy to corrupt the registry--I don't recommend it. Rather, do as much using add/remove programs or the ESRI clean up utility as possible--the ESRI KB 28709 can be helpful if the installer packages remain on the system. Use Add/Remove programs to uninstall the Python2.5 from ArcGIS 9.x and Python2.6 from ArcGIS 10.0 if present. --Vista OS preparation-- Note that Vista only came with .NET Framework 3.0, so if that had not been updated prior to the ArcGIS Desktop 10.0 installation--the installer would have attempted to install .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. That can go awry--so you may need to verify that the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is correctly installed and patched--the validation tool by Aaron Stebman is kind of the standard for doing so: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx Finally Vista, as does Windows 7, can run out of system resources--specifically space in the system registry for recording additional configuration and component registrations. Unfortunately, as that occurs available space in the registry is not dynamically made available. The Microsoft Windows Installer can error and hang the installation. It may seem like the install ran to completion, but it did not. This can lead to sporadic errors when attempting to run any of the ArcGIS components. This is preventable by expanding the RegistrySizeLimit value--a DWORD (32-bit) value-- in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control key using the regedit command. Edit it to set a Hex value of "ffffffff" (8 - "f"s), create the value if not yet present. Setting this value is essential for a problem free installation on both Vista and Windows 7--not an issue on Windows XP that handles dynamic registry resize smoothly. --ArcGIS 10.0 install-- Make those preparations, and starting with a system clean of any ArcGIS components, you are ready for a fresh installation. Run the installation again from an Administrators group account using an elevated command prompt. The ESRI.exe installation panel in the .ISO DVD is fairly reliable for doing the installation. But if you continue to have problems, you can run installation of each component from a command window with the msiexec.exe /i command and include detailed logging to track any issues. I know it looks like a lot of effort, but backing it all out and starting clean will be more efficient resulting in a stable ArcGIS Desktop 10.0 installation. And, when you finish the install, immediately proceed to install Desktop 10.0 SP3 (or then soon to be released SP4) Stuart

I do more configurations in VMWare Fusion but that looks to be an issue with Parallels and your DVD, I think the Windows guest OS is losing its connection to the DVD. You know not to be sharing apps between OSX and Windows as in the above best practices. So try this--if you have access to an external DVD reader, connect it after you've launched the Windows guest OS. You should be given the option of using it in OSX or exclusively in the Windows session. Make it exclusive and load the DVD. Launch the ESRI.exe install panel and all should proceed to completion from the DVD. Alternative would be to download the .ISO image of the DVD from the ESRI trial site. And then to mount the ISO image inside your Windows VM using a utility application. Try the above first, post back if still stuck and you'd like to try the ISO download and mount for the install. We'll give you detailed instructions. Stuart

Renny, You should not have to enable the Data Interoperability extension to be able to apply its SP2 to it. Do you have FME, or anything else other than the ArcGIS Data Interoperability Extension using SAFE components. You look to have Autodesk products installed--they make use of SAFE Software modules, could be conflicts there. It is possible, you may need to uninstall one or the other sets. But if you are going to keep the Data Interoperability extension you do need to install SP2. Not stricly necessary, but I install its SP2 before installing Desktop SP3. Also, ESRI service packs are cumulative. So after your base install--you only need SP3, and any additional patches after it. The 3rd party extensions get their patching from their vendors and are handled in parallel to Desktop--ESRI bundles Data Interoperability with Desktop but it is maintained by SAFE Software. for Alex--No, Data Interoperability is not installed by default with the base ArcGIS Desktop 10.0 install done for Education users. In fact the same DVD media image is used for ALL Desktop 10.0 installation (download or DVD) and installation is done from the ESRI.exe installer panel as for the rest of us. Just the activation steps differ for the Education, ESRI Press and 60-day trial authorization numbers--the extensions are activated as a bundle. I knew Renny had installed it looking at the ArcGIS Administrator screen. Stuart

Renny, Glad you got it working for you; for new users the need to enable each extension as it is needed is not obvious and Alex's hint is the solution. Be aware that the selection is stateful and gets recorded into each .MXD map configuration file. Normal practice is to keep most extensions disabled enabling only those that are needed for the given work being done in the GIS session--hence it is the default following installation. Unfortunately your ArcGIS Desktop installation is not yet complete. You now need to download and apply SP2 for the Data Interoperability extension and then SP3 for Desktop for reliable use. And if you'll be working in ArcGIS on occasion without an internet connection--the new File menu Performance Patch will improve responsiveness. Stuart

Alger, Yes your 365-day Education trial version includes Spatial Analyst. Assuming your authorization number was activated, when you completed the Authorization wizard at the end of the install your extensions should have been authorized and available to you. Have a read of the Trial and Help resources page http://www.esri.com/apps/products/arcgis/eval10/evalhelp/index.cfm, particularly the Installation tab--item #6, did your installation and authorization go as described? Post back with a screen capture of your ArcGIS Administrator pannels (ArcGIS, Desktop, Availability), we'll see if we can help. Stuart

Dean D., et. all Has anyone worked out the command line, or MSI installer edits in Orca, needed to install ArcHydro (or HEC-GeoHMS) when Python26 is installed to a location other than ESRI's C:\Python26\ArcGIS10.0 location? I have an existing Python26 installation to the Python.org default C:\Python26 location, and ArcHydro installer is throwing ERROR 1606. Could not access network location ArcGIS10.0. Also seeing a related installer issue that, lacking the Python26 default location, if a large data drive (D:\) is present--the installer defaults to a TARGETDIR of D:\ Looking through the .msi installer the ESRI default location looks to be hardcoded in:
CustomAction --> SetPythonHome: Source PYTHONHOME: [PYTHONDIR]ArcGIS10.0 (which is the default ArcGIS Desktop10.0 Python install location ESRI uses)
For the Desktop10.0 install we can use the INSTALLDIR1= command line value to specify the Python26 install location. But I can't figure a similar configuration out for the ArcHydro package install. Ideas? Stuart

Yacoub, Would add to Tom's questions which are all valid--especially clearing the Temp space between runs. Can you add more memory? Since the Aster DEM processing runs to completion on a 64-bit Windows 7 with 4GB available RAM it suggests it is a memory management issue under your XPsp3 32-bit system. That is to say, the processing fits and runs to completion in the full 4GB user-mode memory space of a 32-bit program in 64-bit address space. So, is your Windows XPsp3 system limited by BIOS to 2 GB RAM, and can you add RAM? Or is it a laptop that is already maxed out? Adding at least another 1GB of RAM should allow the 32-bit OS some head space to complete the processing in available 2GB per-process user-mode memory address space. You might also need to add a /3GB flag to the boot.ini file which would expand available user address space, and allow each process its full 2GB limit--but don't set this flag unless you ARE able to add additional RAM! Some additional tweaks of 32-bit programs to set LargeAddressAware values can be helpful to increase per-process address space beyond 2GB (notably for python.exe and pythonw.exe). But I would not pursue those just yet as it would add another variable and the existing unmodified programs run to completion under 64-bit OS in when not memory constrained. Stuart
