Thanks so much for the reply Edan, it does not prompt for a UN/PWD all of it is windows auth, yeah its seems to be pretty intermittent and we do have SP2 for .net 2.0 installed, going to start using a GDB and see if it has something to maybe do with the SDE Server ??

ARGHHH still having this issue, doing some background work it seems that it has something to do with authentication, alot fo the data is being pulled off of a SQL server 2008 SDE 9.3, we run backups that push across the state once a day sometimes these take a really long time to run, It seems that when these are running the AGX throws this error quite a bit, still doing some research and I will get back to you if I get a fix

Well have been doing some research and reading the SDK documentation and it looks like this can be done by using the backgroundthread.DoWork and the Background worker ProgressChanged event, using the ReportProgress Method you should be able to create a Progress bar with reports, you would have to create a small form and update the info within it, it seems that everytime you use the ReportProgress method it will fire the progress changed event, the issue I am having now is that you cannot pass args that interact with the UI(in this case doing a directcast from a found lyr file ,PackageChildlayer to .Table onto a background thread, I don't know how you would do this when you can only pass one argument at a time with the backgound threader... hmm any suggestions???

I had some issues with this as well the work around that I have found was everytime you save the map its needs to be reconfigured in the NCFG, I think what happens is after the NCFG is loaded and the Use my own map is loaded, that map is then set to the My Default map, ... I know its annoying. hope that helps a little

I am able to successfully pull attribute information from SDE 9.3 Make sure that you have the sql native client installed (this is for X86) http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/E/6/0E67502A-22B4-4C47-92D3-0D223F117190/sqlncli.msi Then dont forget that data expansion packhttp://gisupdates.esri.com/ArcGISExplorer/Build1700/ArcGISExplorerDataAccessDownload.exe After that I would create a lyr file in ArcMap and (in 10) right click goto to properties and the very last tab it says HTML Popup make sure that the 'show content for this layer using the HTML popup tool' is checked, save to a lyr file after that open AGX and add the newly created lyr file, double click any of its features and viola!! you can now see the Attrib info for the lyr file

I know this might sound like an easy fix and may be silly to mention but have you tried to check what the visible extents are in ArcMap 10??? further. I too have had the same issues with cacheing lyr's alot of the times I have found myself deleting the caches and have had them come back for a usable amount of time but then ultimately they dissapear again.
