First thing I want to note is that storing a locator in SDE will be much slower than storing it in a file folder. It is recommended that you store the locator in a file folder. Was there another question? If so, I didn't quite understand it. Brad

You can change what the "standard" value is by editing the USAddress.lot.xml file found in the ARCGISInstallFolder\Locators folder. In this file you will find alias lists and the first one in the list is the one that will be returned as "standard. Brad

It is something that we will be fixing soon but here is how to geocode the address table until we have a fix. 1. Click the mailbox button with a table added to ArcMap but also make sure you have the table selected in the TOC or you will get the same error. 2. Browse to the table in the Catalog window in ArcMap, right click on the table, and select ??Geocode Addresses?? 3. Use the GeocodeAddresses GP tool Brad

Peter, After you updated with this latest post, statement #4 is now the correct one. When you said you experience it not working in an earlier post, I mentioned that aliases really should be added to the lot.xml file and then the locator should be re-created. This, and only this, will allow for the aliases to work as described in #4. Brad

Peter, Statement #3 is correct. All aliases will be treated as if they are exactly the same. Brad

It really doesn't matter the order of the aliases because they are all treated as equivalent but the first alias in the list is treated as the primary. Brad

If you try to publish the locator one more time with a different service name, can you tell me if it prompts you with a dialog entitled "Copying Data to Server", with the following text "Datasets that will be copied to the server:", and the name and path of the locator that you will be copying? This is what I am trying to figure out. If the above happens, you don't have your data folder registered with Server so your data will be copied to a known ArcGIS Server folder for use instead. If you want to learn how to register your data with Server, read the following help topic: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.2/index.html#/Registering_your_data_with_ArcGIS_Server_using_ArcGIS_for_Desktop/015400000504000000/ Brad

I am asking how you published the data. This means, did you publish it by referencing the locator (creating a data store that pointed to the locator on disk) or by copying the locator to the server (no data store)? If you published it by referencing it, then my suggestion would work. If you published it by copying the locator to the server, then you will need to re-create the service by referencing the locator instead of copying it. Another question. Where is your locator stored? I see you mention SDE is where your address points are located but where do you store the locator? Brad

You would need to stop the service first (it creates a lock on the locator), rebuild the locator, then restart the service. I would imagine that you can create a batch script for this and schedule it as a Windows event to happen every night at a specific time. Brad

If you are editing the already created locator file (*.loc.xml file) then what you are saying is correct. If you edit the locator style template (USAddress.lot.xml in the ArcGIS Install directory in the locators folder), then create the locator from scratch again, it can be the first, second, ... or even last entry in the alias definition. Just some information about the usage of the legacy North America Geocoding Service. It was always free for use for doing single geocodes that are not stored in a database but the service always required a subscription to do batch geocoding (although the monitoring wasn't as good). This is the same terms with the new service except that now you are required to have a subscription. Terms of legacy geocoding service: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=919dd045918c42458f30d2c85d566d68 In addition to that at Desktop 10.2, you receive 100 ArcGIS Online credits for each Desktop license that is on current maintenance. Esri is extending the ArcGIS for Desktop license entitlement to include an ArcGIS Online Organization Account. This new entitlement provides: One Named User per ArcGIS for Desktop License on current maintenance 100 ArcGIS Online credits for each Desktop license that is on current maintenance.
