The only interpolator that we have to use with global data is EBK in Geostatistical Analyst. It uses chordal distances. A point to keep in mind with most interpolation techniques is that the weight decreases with distance.

Oliver You are right, I would change the search neighborhood of idw to only use only a few neighbors. -Steve

Please post an image of IDW using the same classification and colors you have in the finite-element output. What happens if you make the cell size smaller? -Steve

Adam You don't need to do the select all part. To rule out the possibility of an earlier selection, run the tool again but rather than use the layer as input browse to the data and use the feature class on disk as input. Or, open a fresh project and try again. -Steve

Adam You do get a raster when you use the defaults? File geodatabase rasters cannot hold a value if the output has only 1 column and row. I guess that you are specifying a cell size that'll produce a single cell output. Try changing the output to a file based raster, for example, c:\temp\mytif.tif and then look at the properties, right click on the raster layer in the table of contents -> Properties -> Source -> Raster Information.

Emily There are also some additional questions; is the input in meters, feet, degrees? are you expecting a single cell raster? what will you be using this raster for? what version of ArcGIS are you using? Also, you state that the generated output is empty; does this raster have 1 column and 1 row? is it in a file geodatabase (fgdb)? Thanks -Steve

Please post a picture of the output so that we can see what you mean by incorrect. And to note, think of contouring as slicing a potato into horizontal slices. In your case each slice is 2ft in thickness. -Steve

see what happens if you use CopyRaster to copy your ESRI grid to (say) a .tif raster (i.e. c:\temp\myraster.tif) and then use this raster.
