One of the many benefits of using Esri Vector Basemaps is the ability to make custom changes with our ArcGIS Vector Tile Style Editor (VTSE). Changes can be as simple as switching road or water colors, or hiding entire layers of features. The June 2024 Broadband Data Collection (BDC) is now available within ArcGIS Living Atlas. This ready-to-use layer shows fixed broadband availability for every Census Block and H3 Resolution-8 hexagonal area in the U.S. and outlying territories. The layer summarizes the June 2024 BDC data showing the number of served, underserved, and unserved Broadband Serviceable Locations (BSLs) in total and by transmission technology for a given geography. It is a composite of six sublayers – State, County, Tract, Block Group, Block, and H3 Resolution-8 hexagons – each with a related table listing all Internet Service Provider (ISP) offerings by technology and speed tier.  Visit the blog by @PatrickRyan and Steven Aviles to learn more about the layer and associated Provider Comparison App and Provier Footprint Dashboard. Esri is excited to announce the addition of global fishing intensity layers to ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World. These new 1-kilometer resolution multidimensional datasets are the product of Global Fishing Watch, an independent, international nonprofit organization whose purpose is to provide a global real-time view of fishing – making human activity at sea publicly accessible. Visit this blog for a quick summary of the new available layers.  Global Fishing Intensity (Year 2020) provides a global summary of vessel activity in the world’s oceans, detected from AIS tracking data, and is represented as total hours per 1km cell for the year 2020. Global Fishing Intensity – Monthly Time Series (Year 2020) provides a more granular look at fishing intensity, with monthly summaries for 2020. Esri is happy to announce the addition of the Global Wind Atlas to ArcGIS Living Atlas. These exciting new multidimensional imagery layers put wind potential on the map – for anyone to use – and are the result of a partnership between the Department of Wind Energy at the Technical University of Denmark  (DTU Wind Energy) and the World Bank Group, with the objective of “helping policymakers, planners, and investors identify high-wind areas for wind power generation virtually anywhere in the world.” Read more about the layers and how to access them in this blog. The newest 2019-2023 American Community Survey (ACS) estimates are now live within ArcGIS Living Atlas! The collection of over 100 ready-to-use layers covers thousands of ACS values and their associated margins of error. Your new and existing maps will automatically reflect these newest values from Census. The 2019-2023 American Community Survey (ACS) five-year estimates will be available within ArcGIS Living Atlas in the coming weeks. These ready-to-use layers empower people to instantly begin to explore, map, and analyze the data. The multi-scale layers have data for state, county, and tract levels. Having free access to these layers in ArcGIS Living Atlas significantly reduces the time GIS users spend on downloading and processing data.  The ArcGIS Living Atlas Policy Mapping team provides the GIS community with a collection of free layers that contain a wealth of data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS). On December 12th, 2024, Census will release its updated five-year estimates (2019-2023). Within days, the Policy Mapping team will update the set of ACS layers already available in Living Atlas with the newest data. Any maps and apps that already use these layers will automatically update to reflect the most recent Census ACS data. The University of Botswana’s sprawling campus has always been a challenge to navigate. Buildings are not arranged according to any order, therefore students, guests and even faculty members of the university often struggle to find the locations of lecture halls and classrooms, labs, and essential services. The struggle to navigate the campus would have continued if it were not for Dr. Pelane-Modutlwe Lillian and a small group of students who decided to build a useful campus basemap that would serve everyone. Dr. Pelane-Modutlwe Lillian recruited a group of third-year students from the Department of Environmental Science in the Faculty of Science. This project was completed through the Living and Learning Communities Academic Mentorship Program. We would like to introduce the new Environment Basemap which is now available across the ArcGIS platform. Most traditional basemaps are human focused, displaying roads, municipal boundaries, and other human-centric/human created features.
