one last note for the day I want to agree with Cattyann and tell you how very much I appreciate your efforts. I really don't understand why esri hasn't picked up more of your tools and build them in. and I want to tell you how much I am looking forward to having a pick list for values. seems odd that the standard query tool from esri doesn't have this.

how about the 'add selection to layers checkbox question I had before. should I be able to see the selected set on the map or it is meant as way to generate an attribute table of just the selected features.

great, thanks it works. I assume you are working on adding the multiple query options like you have in the flex version so queries can be used to add to or remove from a selected set as well.

hi Robert, I have just discovered the check box in the eSearch labeled "add results as operational layer" can you explain how this works and how to set the default symbol for a point query. I see that it does work and I can display the attributes for the results. but the symbology doesn't seem to be working as there is nothing showing on the map. the symbol I see in the layer list is a circle with a "x" inside it. this tool will solve my 'filtering' issue, as if it works I can turn off the full dataset and just display the results of the query. and one more question.... the symbol for the results is the binoculars from the flex viewer. there is a gui in the webappbuilder to change the default symbol. but it doesn't work with the esearch. I can set it to something else and save but when I run the querytool it reverts to the binoculars. if I wanted to use the big blue circle that is the default in the esri query tool how would I alter your config?

so then theoretically, if someone experienced was doing it, the filter code could be added to the basic or classic map template. if I can ask, how did you decide to work in the WAB environment instead of just building a viewer using the API?

hi Robert, thanks for the response. I have been exploring and I found a sample template here (Esri/local-government-online-apps · GitHub ) that I downloaded and configured to use my AGOL webmap. I got to github from the esri list of templates. the one I like is the apps2 (edit-find-filter). what I am wondering is how hard it is (or what the path to getting it done would be) to take the code for the find/filter and add it to the webappbuilder or to one of the other esri templates like the classic or basic. the ability to filter out and just display specific features is very useful (at least to me). I admit to not having a clue how to do this. I looked at the code I downloaded and realized how dependent I am on just configuring tools.

I don't know for sure I expect you would have to upgrade arcserver to 10.3 . your desktop arcmap users could stay at 10.2.2 but they wouldn't be able to publish. what I do is install arcmap on the server with arcserver so I can author maps from there. all this is just a guess but this has been the pattern in the past.

BBeta 3 i would want the user to be able to define the def. query iI see that there are samples in the we app publishing templates that do this one is called find-filter I think also can you explain the differnce between just using the JavaScript API and the we app builder. i Like to be able to use the easy contraction but I am concerned about not being able to just use web services from arc server like I can with the flexviewer. mostly i'm worried about 'named users' in portal or agol and the associated costs. seems like all this is getting complicated beyond just building simple maps that provide functionality maybe what Larry s. Is building outside of the we app builder is the path to sanity

hi Is there a sample bit of code that I could use to filter point features similar to what the 'definition query' does in arcmap? I think this would be a great enhancement as my users sometimes only want to see specific location without the clutter of the others. any help appreciated. glenn

thanks for the info Lee, can you explain a bit more about 'special measures' to configure portal for SSL please. for example do you have to have a valid https certificate for the server it is on? we generally don't buy these for servers behind the firewall and just set the SSL setting in IIS to 'ignore' so warning aren't thrown. or maybe you are saying that with SSL only set you cannot add mapservices with just http: headings... which doesn't sound very good. how have you gotten around this? I'd also like to understand a bit more about configuring the proxy. is this required? does it have an advantage? I find it interesting and a bit overwhelming that all this is so complex and so poorly supported or documented. if you find someone at esri tech support who truly understands all this let me know. I am sure I will be calling and it would be nice to have someone specific to talk to. meanwhile we can support each other on the is forum.

Larry Stout Larry.Stout@hamiltoncounty.in.gov has been on a crusade to get WAB able to use rest end pts without going through portal or AGOL. I think we all should be supporting his efforts. I am not very interested in having to pay esri for 'named user' seats to Portal for people who are behind the firewall at desks wanting to see a map. I can understand the model for field people who will be logging in from the field on tablets....
