Well, I created this too soon. I found this blog post that shows how to do it using LINQ, and I have it working.

It works beautifully, using the below code. Am I correct in assuming that it will return 100 every time when it is finished?
Private Sub MyMap_Progress(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As ESRI.ArcGIS.Client.ProgressEventArgs) Handles MyMap.Progress
If e.Progress = 100 Then
_LoadingWindow.Close()
End If
End Sub

So if I handle the Map.Progress event, will the last event that fires always be when the Progress property of the ProgressEventArgs object is 100 (indicating the progress is complete)? So I just check when the progress is 100?

I have noticed that sometimes it takes a while for my silverlight app to display the first map image of our dynamic map service. Other controls on the app will display, but the image is blank until it is retrieved, which sometimes leaves a good 5 seconds or so of people wondering why there is a blank map. To help resolve this, I am wanting to display a Silverlight ChildWindow as a sort of "loading screen", and would like to have it show until a particular map service's image is returned for the first time. I can show it in the MainPage.Loaded event, but I don't see any events that occur when the map image is actually displayed in the control in order to close the window. I tried the Layer.Initialized event, but that still fires before the image is returned to the client (but it is as close as I have come to where I want it). Any ideas?

If you for some reason don't feel like sending me your project files, try changing the base layer to our map service layer too and see if you can still get the maptips to work, using the following service definitions:
<esri:ArcGISDynamicMapServiceLayer ID="BaseMapLayer"
Url="http://irnrgis.tamu.edu/ArcGIS/rest/services/Test/Trims/MapServer" />
<esri:FeatureLayer ID="MyGraphicsLayer" Mode="Snapshot" OutFields="*" Url="http://irnrgis.tamu.edu/ArcGIS/rest/services/Test/Trims/MapServer/0" />
If you can get it to work, can I please have your working MapTipWidget XAML and code file?

Well that's what I was doing, and no maptips show for me. This is why I have been pulling my hair out. Are you sure theres nothing else that you have code wise that is not shown? This is why I would have preferred to look at your sample code that is using my service because I know there are code behind changes that you made to that file in order to get it to work that you have not posted. I just want to compare to mine and see what the issue is, or if I get the same problem with your files.

I am able to get maptips to work using a feature layer, using this sample. However, I would like to know why using the Maptip control does not work for me using my service, in my first post. Any ideas?

I have tested with the code I gave and with your service and it's working... So there is probably something else not working in your project but I would need more info to figure out where the issue could be. Note again that using a feature layer would be much easier:) Can you zip up your project with your working code using my service and attach it here? I tried the feature layer, and the maptip does not show, but the features do. I am pulling my hair out wondering what the problem is.

I have already done both of those suggestions, and the maptips still do not display. I even used the same service as the base layer, which would have the same spatial reference, and had already been using a marker symbol instead, and the maptips still do not show, even after making the above recommended changes. The only thing I haven't tried is the feature layer, but as I said, I have tried this several different ways with different services, and I can't get my points to show as map tips when they are queried and added to the graphics layer fine.

I am trying several of the maptips samples on the Interactive SDK, and I just cannot get them to work with my particular service layer. I can step through debugging, and the features are being queried, and added to the graphics layer with a valid symbol. They just aren't showing on the graphics layer. For instance, I have tried a sample similar to this SDK sample, using our service layer, and the code runs through like it should work, but again, no graphics show. Can someone test with this test service layer: http://irnrgis.tamu.edu/ArcGIS/rest/services/Test/Trims/MapServer/0 Does it work for you? Am I going crazy?

I am trying to duplicate the way the layer tree worked in the Web ADF Mapping Application, but in a Silverlight control. In the Web ADF layer tree, for times when a layer is visible, but not displayed in the current extent, the item was greyed out (but checked). When the layer became visible in the current extent, the item was enabled for toggling on/off. How can I check to see if this layer is visible, but not currently displayed in the map extent, in order to do what I want with my list item? I can query the layer and figure out that it is visible, but I am not sure how to then check if the layer is actually displayed in the map service layer. The layer only shows when you zoom in to a certain extent. Right now the layer, when checked in the list, is being returned in dynamicServiceLayer.VisibleLayers, even though the layer is not shown at that extent (which is correct, I am assuming). I just need to go one step further and see if this is actually showing up in the map service in the current extent.

That's actually what I was trying, and it looks like that worked. I set the query's OutSpatialReference property to the Map's spatial reference, and then the returned geometry had the same spatial reference, and it worked (after clearing out the pesky browser cache!)
Dim q As New Query
...
q.ReturnGeometry = True
q.OutSpatialReference = _Map.SpatialReference
...
Thanks for the quick responses, looks like it is all working beautifully now!

Doesn't seem to be that easy. Whenever I try to set the geometry spatial reference, it hangs the browser and no execution happens after that (I tried displaying a simple messagebox right after the line, but it never shows). I can see that the spatial references are different (WKID 4326 is map, 26914 is geometry) before I try to set the feature's spatial reference to the map spatial reference.
