You should be able to upgrade even when using the Oracle Instant Client. If this is not working, please contact Esri tech support so we can figure out what is happening in specific instances. Thanks, Kim

Are you making a direct connection to the geodatabase (as opposed to using an ArcSDE service connection)? If so, do you have the SQL Server native client installed on the ArcGIS Server machine too? ArcGIS Server has to be able to connect to the database and, to do that, it needs the DBMS client if you are using direct connections.

Pongthep, It's odd that the error text says "table ??DBO.%Student_Features?? not found in the datasource" since Error 400 = Duplicate inputs are not allowed... Did the Geoprocessing results show any additional messages? Could you describe how you added the points to ArcMap? I notice that the first time I drag a table (containing an ID, lat, and long columns only) from the Catalog tree into ArcMap it puts a percent sign in front of it...I wonder if that is making it so that ArcGIS isn't recognizing the table in your database.

Hi James, When you added the date field, did you use a date type supported by ArcGIS? If not, it won't show up in ArcGIS Desktop. You can check the supported types in the ArcGIS help: http://resourcesstg.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#/SQL_Server_data_types_supported_in_ArcGIS/002q00000068000000/ -Kim

Correct. Uninstall ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Desktop 10 and install ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Desktop 10.1. There is no installation of ArcSDE with workgroup; all the ArcSDE functionality is built into the ArcGIS clients because you are using direct connections exclusively. If you want to upgrade the workgroup geodatabases to 10.1, log in to your 10.1 ArcGIS Desktop as a database server administrator (dbo) and make backups of your workgroup geodatabases. Then you can upgrade. (Note that you cannot upgrade your geodatabases if there are any connections being made to them, and this includes published services pointing to the data in them. So if you published or started any ArcGIS Server services that connect to the geodatabases, stop them before you upgrade.) Happy upgrading! 🙂

When you ran kill on the user-schema geodatabase, did you use the -t all option? If so, that should have killed all service connections to all the geodatabases in that Oracle instance, even to those in the sde master geodatabase. (User-schema geodatabases don't have services of their own, the service is actually defined on the sde master geodatabase.) You shouldn't have to grant additional privileges to the sde user to kill 3-tier connections; that's only needed when killing connections made directly to the database. I encourage you to contact Esri support so they can help you with this.

when i go to my database version/connection in ArcCatalog, r-click and select the manage menu, all option here are grayed out. Mike, (hopefully my post isn't duplicated...my browser died in the middle of responding...) Had you wanted to create a geodatabase version or register a dataset as versioned? I wasn't sure if maybe you were actually looking to administer geodatabase versions, since you said you had right-clicked the database connection. But then you mentioned the Manage menu item, which is on the dataset context menu, so maybe you were looking to version the dataset, in which case the previous posts answered your question. BUT, if you meant you had wanted to create or manage geodatabase versions, right-click the database connection and point to Administration. The Administer Geodatabase menu item should be active. At this level, there is no question of ownership; as long as you can connect and you are using Desktop Standard or Advanced, that menu item should be active. When you click Administer Geodatabase, you can create and manage geodatabase versions.

Setting PGPORT on the client machine should also work if you are only ever connecting to one database cluster; otherwise, you have to switch that variable when you want to connect to the database cluster listening on a different port. As an aside, the info about providing the port number in the Database Connection can be found in the Database connections topic: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/#/Database_connections_in_ArcGIS_for_Desktop/019v00000003000000/

Hi, It sounds like you have ArcGIS Server Workgroup. Is that correct? If so, there isn't any ArcSDE to uninstall and reinstall, and you don't have to run the wizard to enable your SQL Server Express instance to store geodatabases; unless you are have an EDN or Education Site license, your existing license should still work. After you've installed Desktop 10.1, you can use the Upgrade Geodatabase tool to upgrade your workgroup geodatabases to 10.1. If I misinterpreted, and you're actually using ArcGIS Server Enterprise, then whether you install ArcSDE 10.1 depends on whether you use an ArcSDE service to connect to your geodatabases and/or if you use ArcSDE administration commands.

Jose, What data type gets created in your database will depend on the encoding you are using. If your database is not using a Unicode character set, you can create a varchar field by choosing Text and specifying a length of up to 4,000 from ArcGIS Desktop. If you go over 4,000, a CLOB field will be created in the database. If your database is using a Unicode character set, it will depend on what specific language you are storing. Characters in Latin-based alphabets use 2 bytes, but there are other character sets that use 3 bytes and some use 4 bytes. As long as you stay under 4,000 bytes, though, an nvarchar field will be created in the database. Above that, an NCLOB is created. As Vince said, though, I would think you'd want to set a comment field at a length lower than 4,000 bytes, but I suppose it depends on your particular application. 🙂

If Desktop and Server are on the same server even so I have to install client 32 for oracle??? Yes; otherwise, you will not be able to connect from ArcGIS Desktop. See this topic for information on having both the 32-bit and 64-bit Oracle client's installed: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#/Setting_up_a_connection_to_Oracle/002n00000038000000/ If both ArcGIS for Server and ArcGIS for Desktop are installed on the same Windows computer, set the PATH variable to read the 64-bit client before the 32-bit client.

The release is 10.1 There is no Post Installation wizard at 10.1 because enterprise geodatabases are created from the ArcGIS client. If you are setting up an ArcSDE application server, you must do it manually after you have created your geodatabase. You must alter both the ArcSDE services file and the Windows services file to include an entry for the ArcSDE service port number. Where the Windows services file resides depends on your version of Windows. On Windows Server 2008, it is in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc.

Hi Robert, Did you alter the pg_hba.conf file so that the PostgreSQL database cluster will accept remote connections? I'm guessing you're on Windows, since you said you were connecting locally from ArcCatalog to the database. Here's a topic about setting up remote connections when PostgreSQL is on Windows: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/#/Configuring_a_PostgreSQL_database_cluster_on_Windows_to_accept_connections/002p0000000q000000/ Also, does the SOC account have access to the geodatabase and .sde file? http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisserver/10.0/help/arcgis_server_dotnet_help/index.html#/Preparing_resources_for_publishing_as_services/00930000005v000000/

Hi, I want to ask something about turned to me crazy. I have a sptial database (XYZ) on SQLServer 2008 R2. I can connect to it (XYZ) using arccatalog, but when I created different database (KLM) and tried to connect it (KLM) via ArcCatalog it connects to older (XYZ) database :S I didn't figure out why it doesnt't connect my new database (KLM). Does anyone know anything about that problem? This is a known issue; ArcCatalog is hanging on to the old connection information. If you close ArcCatalog and re-open it, you should be able to make a connection to the new geodatabase. I'll try to dig up the bug number. (By the way, this should go into a different post since it isn't exactly related to the original post.)
